Is the BCS Good or Bad for College Football?

Like I said in another thread, if the Big XII had the same tie-breaker as the SEC, Texas would be going. In the case of a three way tie, if the top two teams in the BCS are within 5 spots, it reverts back to head-to-head for those two teams.

How does that tiebreaker work if all 3 teams are within 5 spots from eachother?

Texas would win the tiebreaker to OU, but Texas Tech would win the tiebreaker vs. Texas....

The tiebreaker would only be for the top two teams. The lowest ranked team is not included.

If Texas Tech gets shafted by Texas for a BCS game, then there is no justice!

WE BEAT THOSE DAMN LONGHORNS, YET THEY GET THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT!

Well in OK, Texas and TT they had their head to heads.. OK beat TT, TT beat Texas, Texas beat OK... So now what do you look at?

Looking at Common opponents is only to help you judge the strentgh of one team vs another prior to their match up. You can only settle whos best on the field. Im not suggesting otherwise.

If either one of those above 3 teams would not of lost to the other 2 we wouldnt be having this conversation it would be an easy choice.

Gee maybe the NFL should nix the superbowl this year and just look at common opponents, who needs a head to head matchup?

ESPN Radio was talking about how he'd prefer a BCS for the NFL right now vs the playoffs, since if they happened today we'd get treated to the Vikings and Broncos in the playoffs instead of the hot Cowboys, Dolphins and Patriots.

A BCS over the regular version of the NFL Playoffs. Your kidding right. The Vikings and Broncos instead of the Cowboys, Dolphins and Pats. What is that guy nuts?

Here is how I view the BCS...

In 2006, Florida won the 1st of 2 NCAA basketball championships. If NCAA hoops picked a champion the same way as the BCS does, the national title game would have been Duke v. Gonzaga, 2 teams that did not even make the Final Four.

Florida was ranked 3rd in the polls in 2007, and won again. (They were seeded #1 over all by the Selection Committee).

When you select two teams, there are always teams left out and everyone has an argument: USC is being overlooked because they are out west and a defensive team; Oklahoma is hot, just destroyed 2 highly ranked teams and beat TCU, Big East Champ Cincinatti, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State; Texas beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri on consecutive weeks before losing to Texas Tech with 1 second to go; Alabama is undeaten; Utah is unbeaten; Boise State is unbeaten; Ball State is unbeaten; Florida is destroying good teams and the blocked extra point which cost the Ole miss game was probably a penalty; etc. etc.

At least in basketball, there are no arguments.

When I was a kid, they called it the "mythical national championship." Now, they have dropped "mythical."

Instead of the BCS, how about having an 8 team playoff bracket based on national ranking??

The same problems we have with the BCS we will have with an 8 team playoff. Team #9 and 10 will likely have an argument to be #8..

Look at the current grouping

There will be complaints about every system, but it's much better when the complaints are further down the list, instead of always at the top, which is where the BCS fails.

BCS feels like what would happen if the NFL season stopped at 16 seasons and Vegas lines dictated who the playoff teams should be.

Better off with a 16 ream field (same as in all the other NCAA Football divisions).
You could include all the Div 1A champions along with 5 at large teams.
The at large teams, and seeding could be determined with a commission same as is done with the basketball tournament.

This is what I would like to see. Then all conference championships would mean something and you'd have the chance for cinderellas.

I am all for a playoff..

but, if the Gators win 2 in a row, I"m still getting a (mythical) National Championship polo, tee and cap (LOL!).

P.S: The Patriots beat the Giants in the regular season last year. Point being: the only way to determine the true champion is a playoff. The winner might not be the best team, but it is the Champion.

I read the post @ Texas Tech beating Texas. Texas was on the road at the back end of Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Tech. Texas started slowly, fell way behind and woke up. It got the lead and then was beaten on the last play of the game. If you are being evaluative, you ned to consider all factors.

I fell bad for Texas, USC & Penn State-- 1 loss teams lkely with no shot. USC has a terrific defense. And, who knows if Boise, Utah or Ball State might not be a George Mason-- or win a playoff (although I suspect Ball State would not. Ball State's QB is terrific, what an arm!). And, Ohio State has really improved offensively now that Pryor has caught fire.

Playoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The difference is that if you are fighting over the 7th or 8th spot, there surely is something you could have done better. Boise State could have a better OOC schedule. Penn State could have won the game they lost. If you make sure you are in the top 3 or 4, then you would not have to worry about how you stack up against other teams that did not distinguish themselves.

Boise State scheduled a PAC10 team, but also had a MAC, a CUSA, and a FCS team. With a weaker conference schedule, they have to have a really tough OOC schedule to prove themselves.

Scheduling tougher opponents for Boise..

is not so easy. The big schools don't want to schedule "home and homes" with "smaller" schools (except occasionally for Hawaii) -- particularly the traditionally good ones who might beat them.

Beating Oklahoma in the BCS game a couple of seasons ago was proof enough. If we had a playoff, there wouldn't be any questions about who belongs. The answers would be right there for everyone to see. Right now it's still a popularity poll as to who gets in.
