A friend told me that FTA systems are illegal and are considered piracy. I don't want to go to prison anytime soon!! What's the word on this? What channels can I get for free, I heard that the number is around 600-800.

Only if you hack a system to receive signal. If you receive un-scrambled signal theres nothing illegal about that.

Your "friend" is clearly uninformed.

free to air (FTA) is the channels that are up there unencrypted. wescopc posted a couple links. Sports feeds, news feeds, international channels, weitrd channels...yep thats FTA You need a 30" dish and a KU Band LNB to pick it up.

But sadly too many people think FTA is when they download illegal software to a box and try to steal Dish Network or Bell ExpressVu. That is considered piracy.

There are plenty of unencrypted channels up there, not 600-800 unless you are hacking (which IS illegal). A FTA receiver can LEGALLY receive any satellite signal which is unencrypted, and there are a varying number of channels up there at any given time, including many wild news and sports feeds. A more accurate number would be 200 or so.

You won't get anything like HBO, TNT, or ESPN, but there are many local network affiliates, foreign channels, and educational channels up there. Best of all are the feeds, which come and go

LOL I can remember as a kid watching HBO, Showtime, Disney, etc. all for free! Then one by one, they got scrambled

It could be 600 or so if you count all the non-english channels and all the random feeds too...
