IMO, I do not think he is worth the 14M/yr. He had one outstanding season but after that he has been very inconsistent. What do you think? Is Hick so stupid to make another mistake like the Alex Rodriguez mistake?

Boras already is trying sell Zito as a No.1 - i.e. $14 million per year - and while neither the Mets nor the Yankees see him that way, somebody else - did someone say Texas' Tom Hicks? - most surely will. Yankee GM Brian Cashman, still smarting from the $40 million, four-year deal he gave Pavano, is admittedly gunshy about committing huge dollars for four or more years to a starting pitcher. "That's why we're doing what we're doing, stockpiling young arms in our system," he said. "You've got to develop your own pitching." Mets GM Omar Minaya, meanwhile, is not ruling out Zito, but it is wishful thinking on his part if he thinks Boras would take No. 2-3 money - $9 mil-$10 mil per year - because the Mets offered New York, a winning environment and the comfort zone of Zito's old pitching coach, Rick Peterson. To Zito, Jason Schmidt, Gil Meche, Ted Lilly, Vicente Padilla, Randy Wolf, Miguel Batista, Jeff Suppan, Woody Williams et al, we can only say: Watch that Matsuzaka number tonight and know that Christmas is coming.

I had a big plate of Ziti the other night...it was delicious, but I certainly wouldn't pay anything close to 14 million for a plate of Ziti. Er...what? You're telling me it's Zito and not Ziti??? Never Mind!!! ~ Gilda Radner:D

Anyway, I feel that Zito is way overpaid...even by baseball $tandards.

No way is he worth $14 million a year. Maybe $8 million.

I'm all for Barry Zito -- and anyone else, for that matter -- making as much money as he can get someone to pay him.

The only reason I would care about how much my team pays someone is if it prevents us from signing someone else. Otherwise, I really don't care how much these guys are paid. If Ilitch wanted to pay Zito eleventy gazillion dollars I'd be fine with it -- unless doing so meant we couldn't keep Bonderman and Verlander and the boys. It ain't my money. The game seems to generate incomprehensibly large amounts of money -- why shouldn't it go to the players?

Well....I would say he is NOT worth that money...but there will ALWAYS be a Yankee team or a Mets team that is dumb enough to pay him that kind of money...Big Useless, Pavano, Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine....should I go on??

No one is worth that kind of cash, Except maybe Cy Young...but he's dead.
I wonder how much he would earn in the current market? :p

Worth 14 Mil in general? NO

Worth 14 Mil to the Mets given the state of their rotation? YES

Of course, I still think they were crazy not to pull the trigger on the Zito for Milledge trade before the deadline. I think that move cost us the big one, and I'm still not that impressed with Milledge.

(side note...given the state of the rumors flying...wouldnt it be interesting to see Zito and Mulder reunited on the Mets with Peterson?)

That is not only a Mets problem but lots of MLB teams are facing the fact that they do not have enough starting pitching and Zito, although not a number 1 Ace, maybe the best there is in 2006 free agency pool. He probably can get you 15 wins per year in a team with good offense but does not expect him to be the one that will carry the team on his shoulders.

Well said.

I don't think ANY player is worth that much.

I wish I could work at most 7 months a year for multi-millions.
