Is it possible that in the future there would be a receiver capable of pumping out at 1080p or is that at this time it's not even possible. Would it just hog up to much space compared to the other HD channels? The reason why I ask is because is it really worth spending your money on a 1080p set if the only thing that you could see on it would be DVD's? Or is something like that on the way?

It doesn't matter except for Blu-Ray. There are NO channels broadcasting in 1080P.

Broadcast content would be have to be upscaled to 1080p if there was a receiver that output 1080p. 1080i for broadcast is not going away anytime soon here in the US. Its a lot of bandwidth to go to full 1080p/60.

The primary benefit of a 1080p display in your home is that it allows you to sit closer to your large display without seeing the digital grid that all the pixels form. It's called the screendoor effect. If you are sitting 1.5 to 1.8 times the width of your screen or more away from that display, you almost cannot tell any difference in most typical settings between a 1080p display and a good 720p display.

The biggest benefit from Dish outputing 1080p is to eliminate the need for native passthru for people with 1080p TVs like me. I can then see 720p material in progressive mode without having to switch the 622's output to 720p from 1080i.

I'm not sure if the current Graphics chip that Dish is using in the 622/411/722/211 supports 1080p. If it does, or if Dish upgrades a later model to a chip that supports that resolution, then they could support it.

It would likely only be of use for HD PPV movies or special events, since any regular network would have a hard time getting carries to go through the expense require to carry a 1080p channel.

So what happned to Dish beingt he HD leader?
