iPhone 4 has been officially announced! Goes on sale on June 24!

Whatever. I just bought a Nexus One and I'm not buying anymore phones until they are supported by LTE or WiMax. Be interesting to see how Google reacts.

He is showing video chatting. You see yourself with PiP. Note WiFi only. They are "working with cell providers" to bring this to cell networks, perhaps next year.

First, it is interesting if he said "providers" (plural). Indicates they are jumping ship from AT&T?

Also, I'm not sure video would work well on 3G. Maybe an indication of a 4G move? Now that the Evo is out, it seems to me Apple is behind the times offering a non-4G capable phone.

I hope they will allow Skype video. It will be a lot more useless if it only works with Apple products.

My concerns with it:

- A lot of these features they've really been beaten to the punch on, other than the screen I think?

- This will create a third class of apps on the store now wont it? Ipad, classic iphone, and iphone 4? A 3rd resolution for apps to take into consideration?

Otherwise, I am sure it'll be a fantastic device, just have my prior reservations about the network and ecosystem.

Keep in mind that on June 24 iPhone 4 is launching in 5 countries. By end of Sept - in 88 countries. That's a lot of providers! ;)

No word on Verizon yet, except a joke from the audience.

Apple currently has a lot of different providers world wide... I also assumed they were going to wait until 4G to do cellular connections. It is interesting that they are doing real time H.264 compression with AAC audio.

It is hard to say they are behind the times when only Sprint has limited 4G coverage out now using WiMax when the rest of the world is looking at LTE next year. Next year will probably be the big LTE push from Apple.

What im wondering is..... When can we jailbreak it? Will it work with tmobile 3g being that its quad band? Whats the retail on it?

It is already jailbroken Bob. I doubt it works with TMobile. The pricing is already in the thread

I think this was exclusively new hardware introduction, sort of Intel's tick-tock model applied to phones: screen, 11n, gyro, external SIM, etc.
Next will be new cell standards (4G) and other system software. Maybe two SIMs...

Would be really interesting to see their SSL VPN in action...

The pricing is for a two year contract with att, and I was wondering what the REAL pricing on the units. I dont get where you say that they are already jailbroken. and as far as not working w/ tmobile, the current units work w/ tmobile same frequencys same bands for the most part. So in theory it should work.

While they supposedly once considered calling it the iphone HD they don't seem to have done that. And I am not sure that at this screen size it would matter.

Besided what does "HD" mean when it comes to a smartphone? It would certainly lead people to believe it means the same thing as in video but that is not necessarily the case.

You're right. In the radio world, "HD" radio is "Hybrid Digital."

4G won't be reasonably available for another couple of years. We'll probably have another version of the iPhone out by then. Sprint can call it 4G all they want, according to a CNN article, the ITU views their product as a variation of 3G.

Nothing earth shattering for me here. I will live with my 3GS for another year and then see what the 4GS or 5G is all about next year.

Nothing earth shattering for me here.
And this, I believe, is why Apple introduced the iPad.
The iPhone is slowly moving into iPod status: still good seller and market leader but WOW! factor is fading.
Especially with those damned leaks...:)

iPad with its new form factor should pick up from here...

Well one thing I know thats missing from the iPhone 4 settings... Wireless N only settings. If the phone was in N mode only then chances are they wouldn't have had the issues they had today. I doubt many people were broadcasting N in there. (I know there were a lot of folks with Overdrives and MYFI's in there...)

How much more can they stick in there? There is not much missing under the hood that I can think of...

Maybe a FM HD Tuner?
Maybe a ATSC TV tuner?
Sure bigger storage... I was surprised no 64GB today..

But what else can they stick in there to make it better?

It would not surprise me to see them have no new iPhone next year.. only new units with more storage in the devices.

Yeah their ok going to wait for my W7 Phones due out this fall. As far as Phones go I think the EVO the best out there even the new Iphone 4 just my 2 cents.. :)

But what else can they stick in there to make it better?
For starters, I wish it had an SDHC (or even a Micro-SD) slot. To simplify picture transfer from cameras and also for extra storage.
HD video output would be good too. Surprised it's not offered.
