I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this. On my Visionsat 200 the Mute button only mutes the mpeg sound, not the AC3.

Never noticed that before, just tried it.

I used the "Extended Signal" setting for the first time yesterday (in Dish Setting Menu, press blue button), that's a great feature, it blows up the signal & quality meters up to cover half the screen, and puts out a blip tone that varies with speed/pitch as the quality level goes up or down.....but the tone doesn't seem work on AC-3 channels?

Great receiver! :)

Certified encoding for AC3 would cost money in licensing fees.
That's why you probably won't see the volume controls running those levels up 'n down, and outputting Dolby.

I'm not sure about muting AC3.
Interrupting the digital bit stream would probably be an illegal condition to some piece of equipment down stream, so that would be a bad idea.

it makes sense that the mute feature would not work. the box is not equipped to decode the ac3 audio signal, hence there is no signal for it to mute.

Somewhere inside it's delineating the AC3 audio signal or else it would not be capable of feeding it to the two AC3 outputs, so muting it should really be quite easy.

does it pass the ac3 through the coax connection?

if you will notice, the volume control is flaky.

are you using the voom to decode the ac3 or do you have it going to a home theater?

Only hi def receivers -decode- AC3 into R/L audio.
All others pass it through to the optical or digital jack on the rear panel, for your hi-fi equipment to decode.
So, first of all, almost nobody even decodes it!

Now, as to re-encoding audio to AC3, that costs money in licensing fees, which nobody wants to pay.
Non-Dolby encoders can't be said to put out true Dolby AC3, because they're not ble$$ed by Dolby Labs.

My video editor people have the same problem.
They can adjust the audio level for a piece of MPEG, but must output mp3.
If the source were AC3, they can output AC3, only if they leave the audio level alone.

If you mean the RF, no.

no, i know that. i was talking about the digital coax. I had my visionsat connected via coax and then i added the voom. I never did care for that setup very much.

I have since retired the visionsat and replaced it with a diamond 9000hd (ac3 comes fine through every connection- i use hdmi).

i love that box. only thing, I had a 160GB hard drive connected last night, and that only allowed for 1hr of HD recording.

I must be missing something. My owner's manual mentions the tone feature for the signal/quality meter, but I have not been able to access it, and the "extended signal" thing with the blue button won't work either.

When you have the double blue bars on the bottom, then hit the blue button.

thanks Jeep. i still think the Visionsat is an all around awesome box. Given it has PVR features and can be had for under $100 makes it a great buy.

Still a no-go. The only options I have in the Dish Setting screen are for the other three colored buttons. Nothing happens with the blue one there. It does the 12 screen preview thing fine though.:)

Maybe I need an update? I'm still new at this and haven't gotten into that yet.

H/W Version S1000 1.00
Driver " API 1.00
Application " NORW v1.15
Data " FDU v1.1

That could be the issue, Larobpra. I am using the (Application Version) V1.45 firmware in mine. You can get it at:

Visionsat Official Company Website

I just checked and the "Extended Signal" option is also present at the bottom of the "Positioner Setting" menu screen, but unlike on the Dish Setting screen where I have all 4 of the colored buttons available as options to perform a function, the Extended Signal (blue button, is the ONLY function available on the Pos. Setting screen.
