Six years ago I installed my own DIRECTV system. Based on what I've been reading, the new systems are more advanced and harder to install.

First, is it still possible to acquire and install the stuff yourself?

Second, are installation instruction available on-line anywhere?

Thanks,

Mike

Sure, it's possible. You can get the equipment you need online, but when Directv installs it for free, why would you want to?

I'm just a self reliant kind of guy. I enjoyed installing the old system and think I should be able to do so again. Also if I do it myself I'll know it's been done to meet my standards and should it need repairing I could do that too.

My only worry is the added complexity of the new dishes. My dish only has elevation and azimuth. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the new systems introduced a tilt to the LNB. This is new to me and I don't know if it's possible for me to do without any special tools. Therefore the reason for the installation instruction

Do what I do, run all your own wiring, so it's neat and where you want it. Then have DirecTV mount the dish and give you the receivers. Otherwise it's going to cost you a lot of money to do it yourself.

You set the tilt for the area of the country you live in and leave it alone. You don't need "special" tools, just wrenches. The dishes I ordered came with instructions. If you get it installed and can't get it peaked well enough yourself you can call DIRECTV and say your dish needs to be aligned. I'm pretty sure a service call is only $50 if you don't have the protection plan. You can even call a local installer and tell them you need your dish re-aligned. I don't know what they'd charge ya.

IF D* does the initial install (dish), there is No Charge for re alignment.

If you install and need a re alignment, you'll probably have a charge, PP or not.

Usually guy's, it's not the dish your not happy with, it's the wire running, let the D* guys come out and do the dish, install your own lines and recvrs, you only need 1 recvr installed to complete the order, maybe not even that.

Alot of the D* guys are very good, particularly if they understand that you know what your talking about.

They charge a fee for a re alignment. If you call them a year after the equipment was installed and say I had a hurricane come thru my area and now my signal strengths are low or 0 they charge you to come out and re alignment.

Do you have the Protection plan ?

Multiple DVR question

Can the receiver signal go through a window?
