So, I have recently purchased a new audio video receiver (Denon 3808CI), which totally rocks. Now it is time to upgrade the speakers and sub. I'm going for the Sub first. I'm thinking that I would like to keep it under $650. Anyone have any suggestions?

Take a look at Velodyne, I bought an 8" open box from CC and it rocks, but I have it in my 12'x12' den. This company mainly only makes subs. As to speakers, I just ordered a 7.1 set of Yambekas, so I will be doing some more rocking soon.

There are the usual suspects for this price range, Velodyne, SVS, and HSU. The HSU VTF-2 MK 3 or the SVS PB12-NSD would fit your budget, and both are very nice subs. There are lots of Velodyne choices, too.

I looked at the SVS and HSU 12 inch subs (obviously only online) and both look pretty darn good from reviews at AVS. I wish I could hear them with my own ears. I also wish it wasn't so expensive to get them shipped! Anyone have any personal experience with the SVS PB 12-NSD or the HSU VTF-3 MK3?

Lakebum, I would highly recommend that you go somewhere where there is a sound room so you can listen to many subs.
The truth is in your ears, not some reviewers.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying Dirtydan (pun intended), but the problem that I have with soundrooms is they are not "real world". Just wondering if anyone else had used either of those.

Well, I went with the SVS PB 12-NSD. Should receive in a few days. I'll report back on how it sounds when I get it.

That ED A5 is one ugly sub though (main reason I didn't go with the ED brand)

Well, I wanted to stop back in and give my impressions so far of the SVS sub. All I can say is amazing. This sub totally changed the sound of my entire setup for both movies and music. Instead of hearing a "thump" and knowing exactly where it was coming from (the old sub), I now feel like there is bass coming from each speaker. I am totally amazed at the difference. To be honest I expected to be totally disappointed by the addition of a real sub woofer. I just watched the Bourne Ultimatum and I was grinning through half the movie because of the change. I also have been streaming music from my computer with my Denon 3808 and it all sounds amazing. I have played everything from country to heavy metal to rap and have been impressed by each. Prior to the addition of the sub everything sounded OK, but now, Wow! I had planned on upgrading all of my other speakers as well, but to be honest I am going to be holding off on that now. If anyone has any specific questions please ask away.

I have an Epic Tower and was running dual SVS 20-39's. The single Tower blows the SVS 's out of the water. Check the Epic line up . They are priced at a good value and you can call and talk to the owner Chad and ask him any questions you have about what to buy for your setup. He will explain the differences of each sub in his line up.

The SVS PB 12/13/ultras are not the same as two 20-39s. No offense to Epik but you need to compare subs in the same category.
