If I switch to D*, can I take recorded shows from External HD?

My 18 months is up with DISH, Direct seems to have the upper hand in HD and has my choice of channels at a lower price and all I yet need to do is investigate PQ of D* vs E*, both HD and SD and then....well, if I decide to ditch DISH, can I take my recorded shows on MY external HD in some form to Direct DVR?

To put it on a HR 20? The answer would be no.

So my only option would be to record them to DVD, lose the HD OR record to a HD DVR recorder. No other way to get the shows off the external HD--even hooking up to Linus PC?
