AMAZING that this guy still does not get the respect he deserves. 8 STRAIGHT years of getting 200 hits has not been accomplished SINCE "Wee-Willie" Keeler.
That is OVER 100 years ago...think of about...NOT Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Mays or Williams has EVER done that. WOW!

Congrats!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki matched Willie Keeler's major league record of eight straight 200-hit seasons Wednesday night, beating out on infield single in the eighth inning for his third hit against Kansas City.

The Japanese star came into the game three hits short of the record set by Keeler from 1894-1901. After walking to lead off the game, he hit a double just inside first base in the third and had a bloop single over third in the fifth.

Suzuki matched Keeler in the eighth when he hit a ground ball up the middle then beat shortstop Mike Aviles' throw by a half-step.

"It has been roughly 100 years since Wee Willie Keeler - in normal circumstances, there's no way I would associate with somebody that is that far apart from me," Suzuki said through an interpreter. "But thanks to something like this, I have the opportunity to be associated with him and cross paths with him. That's something that makes me very happy."

Suzuki reached 200 hits in 151 games this season after doing it in 136 a year ago. Shortly after beating Aviles' throw, the PA announcer told the crowd of the accomplishment, leading to a standing ovation from the Kansas City crowd. It was a similar response he received in Texas earlier this year, when he reached 3,000 combined hits in the majors and Japanese League

"Each time something like this happens, at first I think the game will keep flowing around," he said. "So when it (the ovation) actually happens, I'm surprised and I'm very happy and very thankful. When something like this happens, the locations become special places for me."

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Ichiro ties MLB mark with another 200-hit season

He's going to exceed Rose's hit total between MLB and the Japanese league. I don't see any problem with him reaching 3,000 hits here. How old was he when he got to MLB?

Pretty impressive, conversely my vote for most consistent whiffer would be Reggie Jackson who consistently struck out 100 or more times 13 straight seasons, and 18 of 19 seasons. It would have been 19 straight if it weren't for injuries.

Can anyone beat Reggie's 13 straight?

Adam Dunn will make a run for it.

Very impressive. But I like Tony Gwynn's stats better: 1983-2001 hit over .300 every season. Ichiro might beat that someday, but he has a long way to go.

Yeah...it is quite impressive. But you have to play a TON of games and get a TON of ABs to get enough chances to hit 200 hits for 8 straight years. You don't need that many about to hit .300.

I wonder what kind of stats the greats from the early 1940s would have come up -- most of whom missed 4 years (or more) in the prime of their lives...

Williams
Dimaggio
Feller
Spahn

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Of course Feller and Spahn were pitchers so it isn't completely relevant to the topic at hand.

Off the top of my head.

It's too bad Gwynn didn't hit leadoff or really keep himself in shape like Ichiro does. I think he would have easily have set the all-time record for hits and given that consecutive 200-hit seasons record a run for the money.
