I'm a 9-year E* sub, have no experience with D*. I have been getting HD for about 10 months at this point. I have 3 receivers, an owned 622 and a leased 811, leased 301. My total bill at this point for those 3, HD Bronze with locals (no HD LiLs yet in my DMA), and the associated fees and taxes is $80.52 per month. So you can make a comparison with that. Yours would be somewhat less with comparable programming. But right now you'd get at least a $10/mo. discount from E* with any new HD subscription that I'm not getting, along with some nice discounts on leases with 18-mo. commitments. I'm sure D* would have similar new sub. packages.
How many TVs do you want to have independent programs at one time? The 622 HD DVR also has an independent TV2 output that is SD (and down-converted HD) only, so that receiver would give you 2 independent locations, and you could split that to additional (dependent) locations. If you need 3 independent tuners, add a 311. In that case your bill would be about $5 a month less than mine with similar programming. I currently get 25 HD channels from E* (not counting the PPVs that I don't access) and a couple more with an OTA antenna.
If you want the Sunday Ticket, D*is your only choice, and I have heard that D* in general has more sports (no quantitative comparison). E* currently offers more "HD" channels (well it's actually "HDLite", as with D*), but D* is supposedly catching-up.
I am completely satisfied with E* especially with the current HD offering. I'm sure D* subs. will have a similar recommendation for D*. Good luck with your choice; I don't think you will go wrong with either...!
