I just mentioned this on another thread ....

Eutelsat has started a UHD test channel and notes in the news release:

ULTRA HD FORMATS & IMPLEMENTATION

Two formats exist in Ultra HD: Quad HDTV/4k TV (3840 pixels over 2160 lines) and 8k TV (7860 pixels over 4320 lines).

The take-off of Ultra HD should be facilitated by the forthcoming implementation of a new compression standard, HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding).

Will we see UHD anytime soon in the states?
Maybe via (FTA) satellite, but on dish or direct, cable or OTA, I kinda doubt it. Look at how long it took to implement DTV? It will be common in Europe and Asia well before we see them testing here. And when it's debuted it will only be in large markets. Smaller markets will have to wait, Like HS internet..Out here 'in the sticks' , it was 10+ yrs before it's arrival. (and it's still only mediocre) The first place, and therefore the most common place, you'll see it is in streamed (internet) video. IMHO
