It's been a while since I set up my system, so I'm uncertain if what I am doing is feasible.
I'm trying to help a friend set up...he has 30" elliptical Hughesnet dish with a directway lnb.
I have no specs on the lnb, but I'm wondering if this dish and lnb can be used for Ku band?
any help or ideas greatly appreciated...

Yes you an reuse that dish and lnb just remember you don't need to hook up the transmitter part just receiver part. Welcome to the site. Please post pics so we can help you out further.

30" is very small for FTA and the receive portion of the dish is only one polarity. A poor choice for FTA IMHO

If that's 30 inches wide, and quite a bit less vertically, I'd say it's on the small side. Might do OK, just OK, on 97W.
I wouldn't expect 100% of the channels nor the channels it does get to be 24/7.
Post some pics for more info.

Yeah I would not recommend that dish, especially for a newbie. Used to you could get away with it, but with most services going to DVB-S2, it will not be of much use.
Like FaT said you can probably get some transponders on 97W, but the single polarity will cause you headache.
If funds are super tight, and it is already mounted give it a shot and get your feet wet, just be very patient with it.

I've found once you know the original polarity, if you target the available programming, a single-use intended unit is fine! I've used my DTN dishes as-is for single channels via switches and found them a GREAT way to go, but...as noted, maybe not for first-setup....With the DTN's you can rotate the (norsat) LNB's, not sure about the satellite-internet type of mount.
