Hughes First in Industry to Implement Adaptive Coding and Modulation Feature

Germantown, Md., USA, May 9, 2006—Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the world’s leading provider of broadband satellite network solutions and services, today announced the introduction of its next-generation platform, the HN System, which will support the most efficient implementation of the DVB-S2 industry standard with ACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation). The HN system is also compliant with IPoS (IP over Satellite), the first global satellite industry standard approved by TIA in North America, and ETSI and ITU in Europe.

Hughes’ implementation of DVB-S2 with the ACM feature, as defined in the standard, gives Hughes customers higher system availability and greater throughput for a given antenna size. The HN system optimizes link performance, even in networks with geographically diverse locations and in high rain areas, by adjusting error-correcting codes and modulation dynamically based on signal quality feedback from HN remote terminals. The greatly improved Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) error correcting codes, combined with the adaptability features, make the Hughes solution the most efficient DVB-S2 platform on the market today.

“The HN System with DVB-S2 will take satellite broadband performance to the next level,” said Pradman Kaul, Hughes Chairman and CEO. “Along with higher speeds and improved bandwidth, our newest system solution will also provide significantly improved operational efficiency. This truly will unlock the full power of DVB-S2 for system operators and for their customers.”

The new HN7000S remote platform consists of the HN7700S for high-end enterprise and government applications, the HN7000S for less demanding business requirements, and the HN7740S for integrated VoIP and broadband services. These remote terminals will support both DVB-S and DVB-S2 standards, providing operators an easy transition to DVB-S2. The DVB-S2 NOC (Network Operations Center) configurations include the HN NOCLX, a full-size NOC, and the cost-effective and scalable HN NOCCX for small initial network requirements. The NOCs support both DVB-S2 and DVB-S remote terminals.

The HN platform can be easily configured to support a wide range of data rates, giving international service providers a great deal of flexibility in designing their service plans. Key features of the Hughes DVB-S2 standard implementation include QPSK and 8PSK modulations for higher throughputs; efficient LDPC coding; and ACM for improved availability and power conservation.

Shipment of the DVB-S2 compliant product line to international service providers will begin by late Q2 2006.

HughesNet™ solutions and services based on DVB-S2 will be announced as they are rolled out at Hughes-owned and operated facilities in the US, Europe, Brazil, and India

The DW7740 is a high-performance broadband satellite router with Voice over IP (VoIP) designed to provide both integrated VoIP capabilities, as well as high-speed access for the large enterprise, government, and small/medium enterprise (SME) markets.

Recognizing the worldwide demand by enterprises for ever increasing amounts of bandwidth and the need for high-quality VoIP connectivity, the DW7740 has been designed to provide unsurpassed performance for even the most bandwidth-intensive applications. With support for two simultaneous LAN subnets as well as two simultaneous twowire FXS analog voice ports, the DW7740 has the flexibility to handle a wide range of enterprise IP networking requirements.

The DW7740 enables applications such as:

* Telephony connectivity for remote branch offices
* VoIP services for SME and SOHO
* Combined payphone and Internet connectivity for public calling offices
* High-speed Internet/intranet access
* Video services including remote site security monitoring
* Diverse satellite backup of primary broadband access
* Polling, enterprise CRM and ERP
* Interactive distance education with two-way VoIP connectivity
* Real-time multimedia streaming and large file content distribution

The DW7740 operates with all HN systems and uses the industry standards DVB-S and DVB-S2. As a result, the DW7740 can be configured easily to support a wide range of downstream data rates by selecting different modulation, symbol, and FEC coding rates. The downstream is scalable up to 90 Mbps and the upstream return channel is scalable up to 1.6 Mbps. The DW7740 provides an integrated broadband LAN solution to Windows®, UNIX®, Apple® Macintosh®, and other platforms running IP over Ethernet. The power of the DW7740 allows the same platform to scale as the need for higher speed business applications grows, protecting the customer’s investment well into the future.

The DW7740 also coexists with prior DW generations; insuring that existing customers’ investments are protected. Implementing either the G.729AB 8 kbps or G.723.1 5.3/6.3 kbps voice codec with echo cancellation, voice activity detection, and comfort noise generation, the DW7740 offers superior quality telephony integrated with broadband IP support. VoIP support has been optimized for use with the Hughes HN System as the DW7740 will automatically reserve bandwidth on a call-by-call basis, thereby providing high-quality voice without dropped packets. The HN system also facilitates short call set-up times—typically less than four seconds—and low end-to-end delay inside the HN system.

Transmission efficiency is further improved by compressing the voice packets. The Network Operations Center (NOC) routes voice calls to the PSTN via an H.323 voice gateway. The voice gateway performs the conversion from the H.323 protocol and the PSTN signaling. A gatekeeper provides the address resolution between the DW7740 and multiple voice gateways. For IP data packets, the DW7740 satellite router passes packets to and from any IP device on the LAN and has much of the functionality of an IP router. The DW7740 incorporates Hughes’ advanced Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) feature, which increases throughput performance and maximizes the user’s experience and satisfaction. The DW7740 also supports Hughes’ TurboPage® feature, providing HTTP acceleration for lightning-fast browser performance and advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features to ensure that applications get the priority and bandwidth they require.

Features:

* Supports unicast and multicast IP traffic
* Software and configuration updates via download from the NOC
* Implements dynamic, self-tuning Performance Enhancement Proxy (PEP) software to accelerate the throughput performance by optimizing the TCP transmission over the satellite, delivering superior user experience and link efficiency

DVB-S

DVB-S stands for Digital Video Broadcast - Satellite. DVB-S transmits television as well as radioprograms. In oposite to DVB-C (Cable) and DVB-T (Terrestrial) there is no infrastructure needed and also it offers in lonely areas television-and radioreception.

DVB-S2

DVB-S2 is a further development of DVB-S standard. The new satelite-transmissionprocedure DVB-S2 has a 30% higher efficency as DVB-S.This is possible because of using new kinds of modulation (8PSK, 16APSK and 32APSK). In addition the error correction was improved by a highly efficent Low-Density-Parity-Check-Code.
