I'm looking forward to mpeg4 SD channels b/c currently the SD channels look like crap (ecspecially on the hdtv).....I wonder if Dish has plans to inform the average consumer of the improved (hopefully) PQ eastern arc will offer...
It will not be called Eastern Arc.
I too am curious to see what if any difference the MPEG4 sd will bring. For now from what I have read, the engineers are the only ones to get a glimpse of it. It is still not clear if Dish is doing this to save bandwidth or pq purposes. Or both. MPEG4 sd can have a total of up to 30 per transponder. It will be interesting when the subs get a look at MPEG4 sd. In many ways I find this more interesting than the hd they will add.
I agree, I don't expect miracles, but Tennis Channel in SD on Time Warner was fairly decent on an HDTV, and totally blows on E*. I paid an extra $4 to get Tennis Channel in TW's sport pack, so maybe TW made sure it was decent looking. IMO, it certainly is possible to improve SD PQ viewing SD on an HDTV from what E* is currently providing. We should know more in about a week.
And we can't expect miracles. It is, after all, SD, not HD.
My guess is they won't market it at all.
They wont want people moving to EA as they don't want to pay to upgrade people. However new customers will be put on the Eastern Arc and wont even be told that they are on something special.
Customers who want to move to EA will be able to do so, but at their own expense. This includes a new Dish and MPEG4 receivers if they need them.

According to this, you can check it out now on 9400 and 9401 if you have an mpeg4 receiver, at least AT100, and a dish pointed at 61.5.I too am curious to see what if any difference the MPEG4 sd will bring. For now from what I have read, the engineers are the only ones to get a glimpse of it.
