How does Hopper choose satellite when you get 2 with the same channel

I have the western arc( 110,119,and 129). I also added 61.5 to get my locals in HD. Many of the channels, especially those on 110, are duplicated on 61.5. We had a bad rain storm to our east and I lost all my locals in HD on 61.5 plus anything else on 61.5. However the western arc satellites were still working. The Hopper automatically switched to locals in SD on 110. However , for many other channels that are duplicated on the western arc it did not switch automatically. For example Goal Line in HD is on 61.5 and 129. The Hopper would not allow a switch to 129. I had to go to the guide and select the SD version which is on 119.

I believe the Hopper SW should be upgraded to do this switching. It should at least allow the user to select which satellite should be the default for duplicates.

I guess Dish doesn't think this is a SW problem. So it never gets on its fix list. I wonder how you let Dish know that you would like this feature as well as other features we lost in SW upgrades or are on other receiver models but not the Hopper?

I would be happy to take a look at the account and see what we can do to get this fixed for you. Please private message me the account/phone number as well as the 4 Digit Pin you created.

Supposedly, it was answered on the dish forum, that the first satellite found in the CST screen, should take priority, but I think that was disputed and proven false.

It was being worked on last that I heard. I believe the original issue surrounded HD and SD ptat alternating but I think this would be fixed by the same thing. That switch matrix is not an approved matrix and it was probably never tested or support given to it. Hopefully you get a resolution sooner than later.

When I first got the 61.5 side dish, I had All American Direct for distant networks. All American Direct was on the western arc. So I didn't switch to the eastern arc. Now that All American Direct is gone, I am wary of switching. Since I have had the 61.5 satellite, I have lost reception to it 2-3 times and never lost the connection to the western arc.

Thank you andreab for your offer of help. However, the problem is not an individual one. More than a few of my neighbors that have the same satellite set up as I have had the same loss of signal on 61.5 as I. The dish angle to see the eastern arc from west Texas is very low in the sky and will have more reception problems than the western arc. The problem is how your SW switches off when a channel is lost. It looks for a SD alternative and never a HD alternative on another satellite. If the SD alternative is on the same lost satellite, it never searches for another alternative.

IF you have western arc setup and a side sat for say 61.5 sat like I did on my second DISH account for my parents, you can have needless problems like signal losses that crap out the entire system. In their case their locals come off of 110 sat on western arc and 61.5 on eastern arc. The 61.5 sat was not peaked as well as it should be and his locals would default to 61.5 where they would crap out. I cut the cord on 61.5 and he has no more lost signal messages popping up now.

The problem with mine is that 61.5 is my HD locals and 110 is in SD only. Of course, I prefer HD. Mine does fine with locals. It finds the SD locals when I lose the HD locals. It is all the other channels that it cannot find an alternative and I have to go to the guide to get one to come in. This only happens if there is an SD alternative on the western arc. I can never switch to the HD channel on a western arc satellite. It is always defaulted to the 61.5 satellite. The SW change or addition I would like to see is a switch matrix to find an alternative channel in HD then SD on an active satellite. It would also be nice to be allowed to set a default satellite for duplicate HD channels. Why must 61.5 be the default?

I don't think it's the default, I think it depends at which point in the stream the receiver grabs the guide data. Again, I'm guessing it acts this was because it was never supported and the logic that is applied with supported matrices is not there. Just my guess

This is a first for me, I'm watching 205 and notice it is in sd off 119, so I checked other channels on 129 t28, all were showing in hd. So I changed from 205 to 200 and back to 205, now it is as it should be, hd.

I believe the Hopper SW should be upgraded to do this switching. It should at least allow the user to select which satellite should be the default for duplicates.
I can't see Dish doing anything like that for something that would be used by so few customers...

The main point in my post was that if you mix the two arcs and you will have problems. There isn't much on the 61.5 sat except HD locals via spot beams and the SD channels . MOST of the HD channels are all on 72.7 sat. IN your case , since your Hd locals are on 61.5 , you need eastern arc setup . You would only need 61.5 and 72.7 sats in the mix and you can use the 1000.2 dish with the new eastern arc 2 headed lnb and have it re-pointed to eastern arc sats. The eastern arc 77 sat isn't needed any longer, unless you have latino pack and then you would get the older eastern arc 3 headed lnb and a 1000.4 sat dish. IF you take my suggestion I have outlined , your problems should go away.

Any Major Channels not offered in HD?

Can this be done?
