Hopper with sling internet connection

I have a hopper with sling that was previously connected with the internal wireless. I cannot seem to connect a HIC or direct Ethernet connection to it to get connectivity. Broadband support stated that once a hopper w/ sling was connected wireless you cannot use another means of connectivity with it. This seems ludicrous to me. Could someone tell me if this is true or not.
