I have looked into switching to dish from uverse a couple of times but never could pull the trigger ( main reason is when I had dish years ago when it rained I would lose signal ). Anyway I haven't looked into dish and the hopper in a year or so. I'm assuming a lot has changed. From what I've heard the hopper now comes with a built in OTA module so I can get my locals right out of the box and in HD and they will show up on guide and I can use PTAT if I want ? I'm in Lubbock Texas . Also I saw on the dish website that the hopper can record 8 channels at once ? Can somebody explain ? Because last time I looked into it it was 6 at once during PTAT , the 4 locals plus any 2 others. If I finally pull the trigger I will want it on 2 tv's bad want a hopper on each tv is this possible going thru dish itself or do you still have to go thru a local installer to get this done ? Hope someone can help answer my questions. Thanks.

The Hopper does not have a built in OTA module. It has a USB OTA module that can be added. PTAT feature will be record from a satellite tuner and not the OTA. The Hopper can record up to 8 things if you have a Super Joey and are using the PTAT feature. PTAT records the 4 major channels and the Super Joey adds two extra tuners, which allows you to record 4 additional things. 2 TVS would require a Hopper and a Joey at least. A Joey runs $7 per month and a Super Joey is $10.

Can you record 9 channels total with the OTA module added to the Hopper?

How many with PTAT off if you have a hopper and super Joey ? Can anyone tell me if its still possible to get 2 hoppers and no joeys if you go thru a local installer ?

Also with an OTA module I don't need an antenna ? Or I still do ?

With a Hopper + Super Joey and PTAT off, you have 5 tuners.

You can add an OTA module to the Hopper and record/view one more OTA channel.

And yes, if you use a local installer you can get a two hopper setup without any Joeys.

The OTA module is not antenna unto itself...an apparent popular misconception.

So do I have to have an OTA mudule and an antenna in order to view and record the 4 local channels ? Or is the OTA module and antenna only for the ability for an additional tuner to view and record an additional local channel ?

PTAT will record the 4 local channels on one tuner from the satellite. The OTA module and antenna adds one OTA tuner that can record (or watch) one OTA channel at a time.

The vast majority of Hopper users (my wild a** guess is 97+%) do not have OTA. As has been said - Satelliteguys users are not normal.

When I purchased my OTA module for my HWS, I had to buy it off the internet. Dish did not even carry it, so it must not be that popular. I see that Dish now has it available at their site. Also, the local dealer did not even stock it, but claimed that he could order it, but I got it cheaper, buying it off the internet myself.

They are $30 from Dish. They've been available from Dish since they were released, though maybe they were out of stock at some point.

I have found in the past when DISH is out of an part in the on line account "Order From Store" section, the item is not listed. When it is back in stock it shows up. I wish DISH would just leave the part in the list and just say Out of Stock.

I remember it quoted as no sale (or acknowledgment) until you had the Hopper. Thus it was after market?

That is correct. You will not see the OTA dongle until you own a Hopper. It has always been that way. In other words, you had to get the Hopper activated, then you could order the dongle.
