We're moving on Monday and I won't be in a big hurry getting Dish out to "move" us. I know that we can watch off the DVR for a while, but it seems as though if the receiver doesn't see satellite input after "x" amount of time, it disables service (??). Is that correct ? What's the timeframe ?

Also, does a similar thing apply to OTA service ? Can we use that for a few days ?

On a related, non-Hopper note, what would cause a Dish Mover option to not be free ? My co-worker did it ~2 years ago and they charged him money. Said something about a "required upgrade" or something... sorry, no real details. I just looked at Dish's website at the fine print and the conditions of not getting Dish Mover for free don't apply. We've had Dish for over 8 years (so we're not within our first 12 months of service) and haven't used Dish Mover in the previous 12 months.

That timeframe is not specific. You don't really know when the last "phone home" hit was.

Should be no cost unless you are upgrading equipment; even then it may be low cost or free.

I suggest keeping the account active and getting them out quickly.

I doubt the OTA or even DVR will work long without contact with Dish.

You could do a call out right before you disconnect the sat (YELLOW - BLUE - 3.)

Don't know about a hopper, I've gone anywhere from 2-3 days to a week on my 211's and 722 when I've remodeled or taken one to the lake, before I put a 2nd Dish up out there. I can only remember once having to have a receiver reauthorized and that one was disconnected for nearly a month during a remodel of our game room from storm damage.

The potential cost of a Dish Mover (oh, they call it the Dish Move In Deal now...jeez), has changed over time, and can still change. Before, one way to trigger a cost was if the customer had service less than a year, or had moved within the last 365 days. It could also be triggered by account standing, customers who have a lot of past due payments can trigger lower account standing and therefore a cost for moving. I'm not at work, don't have it up to check, but those are the only things I know of that would possibly trigger a cost for the move.

A week is unlikely to be a problem.

Okay, our move on Monday got delayed ! Talk about a panic as we had 90% of stuff packed... Ended up moving on Tuesday. I did re-connect the DVR Monday evening to record a few things that night and overnight. Hooked it up the following day* and as of last night, we can still watch DVR'd stuff with no problem.

* One thing we ran into was it obviously wants to go through the acquiring satellite screen. Problem is, it never gave up. Shouldn't it have a time-out setting so it quits trying after "x" minutes ? I can't say it will quit after 15, 30, 90 minutes as I didn't pay that much attention. Now, while it's on that screen, the only button is "Close" I think. Hitting it, I presume it continues trying to acquire in the background, but I can't recall what screen it takes you to. Pressing "DVR" didn't work and pressing "Guide" gave a blank grid (I would have thought it should have 3-4 days of guide data, if not 8-9). I knew to press "Menu" but at first, that wasn't even working. Eventually it did (I wonder if the acquiring satellite function finally gave up and then allowed me ??) and I got to the DVR screen. Now, pressing the "DVR" button like normal is also working...

I haven't tried the OTA setup. FWIW, a phone rep, and she claims she double-checked with her supervisor, said it won't work without satellite service. Makes no sense other than from the guide aspect or, and this is more likely, it's simply a business decision by Dish to not allow it. On an unrelated note, using this cheap little antenna from Radio Shack, on our TV upstairs, I can now pick up Cincinnati's locals in addition to Dayton's. My normal antenna is an older, Radio Shack-branded version of this one, that I will mount either outside or in the attic.

Under the current business rules (7/25/13), there're no required customer fees to have your system installed at your new residence. Also, no new term commitment.

I'm not sure why there was a charge for my co-worker.... I did ask if the move was free and the phone rep said, "no, it costs a million bucks". Then he of course clarified that it was free. I laughed about it, but it surprised me in today's corporate oversight environment that he even joked about it. Mind you, it didn't bother me one bit and I wouldn't "tattle" on the guy.

I did remember that part of Dish Mover includes 3-months of a movie package and a discount on a sports package (just now confirmed that it's (3) movie packages for (3) months), so I asked him and he said, "sure, I can give you one" and named Starz, Showtime, and Cinemax for me to pick one of them. I'm not too worried as we've had these promos before and often end up watching NOTHING from them. I would think that part of the moving process in Dish's system that it would go step-by-step, including asking. Or, will I actually get all (3) and he acted like he gave me one of them ?

Not exactly related, but do Dish installers (this will be done by Digital Dish - they cover most of Ohio and ALL they do is Dish work) install wall plates ? If wall-fishing is necessary, I will NOT ask them to do it though. I think it's easily accessible from the basement though.

I do have an existing coaxial wall plate on that wall but I'm planning to (and already am) using it for our cable modem connection. It's in about the most central part of the house I can get so it's a good spot for the wireless router too.

They may have to replace any white feed-thrus as they come with store wall plates--usually with blue-core 3 GHz ones. This required me to go back and reverse them in the plate because of their size and shape. My installer last Feb. refused to accept the 722-working plates and white feed-thrus, and I guess he should have done that, and just fed cables thru and supplied the blue feed-thrus not mounted in my snap-in square-hole plates.

I thought he was surlily not going to do anything but it worked out with a little jiggering by me, afterward.

If they see any non-3GHz cable that may be additional work--fishing. Just hope your cables are acceptable from the dish to Hopper.

Also make sure there are no really sharp bends in the RG6 inside the wall box behind the wall plate.

If I had it to do over I would have requested larger or deeper wall boxes when the electrician was doing the install in our new house under construction. (So many after thoughts once the house is built)

All went well on the install on Saturday. Real nice guy and he confirmed all of the ridiculous requirements that are imposed on them, call-backs, and so on. He wasn't able to use the existing pole from DirecTV and the dish is temporarily sitting on a piece of plywood with cement blocks until they get a utility location done and then someone will do a proper pole-mount. He also was able to use existing wiring (shhh, installed by Time Warner). I even think he located the Solo Node in the Time Warner box, but as I understand it, contrary to what TW wants people to believe, once they fasten it to the structure, it's no longer their property.

I plan to use the DirecTV pole to mount my OTA antenna but I'll need an adapter. He left the D* wiring in place on my request because I'm also planning to use one of the three conductors for my antenna.

Before calling DISH customer service...

Dish Anwhere, worked flawlessly
