In a move that should heighten the growing home networking competition, the HomePlug
Powerline Alliance board completed and approved a new broadband standard for powerline
networks late last week.

The new spec, known as HomePlug AV, is designed to enable high-bandwidth multimedia
streams to zip throughout the home over normal electric powerlines. The streams include
simultaneous standard definition and high-definition video, whole-house audio,
voice-over-IP (VoIP), and data networking.

The new 200 Mbps HomePlug AV spec, which is backwardly compatible with HomePlug 1.0, will
compete with such other next-generation home networking technologies as the Multimedia
over Coax Alliance (MoCA) and Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HPNA) standards.
Alliance leaders will demonstrate the new AV platform at next month's HomePlug conference
in San Francisco. Intellon, one of the leading developers of the HomePlug spec, is also
showcasing the technology this week at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
