This is an FYI for people who might not get the Radio shack sales ads in mail.
If you're thinking about a home theater system, RS has a good price on a Yamaha
5.1 system, 660watts, center channel speaker+4satellite speakers and big subwoofer. Looks exactly like the one I bought from them in Jan, and I have been very
satisfied with its performance. Makes this AC-3 sound on FTA come alive. 169.97 thats 80bucks off reg price.Thru Aug14 07
ps-it will make LOTS of noise, Ive given my ears a pain forgetting about the mute button being on, then hitting the volume up !

dvd recorder

While you are there . . .

I hate to be a cheer-leader for RS, but last month I got a DVD recorder from them.
It is still on sale, and does 2hr, 4hr, 6hr, 8hr, and 10hr modes...
I use 2- and 4-hour exclusively.
Runs only -R DVD media, which is fine - that's what I prefer.

For $50, you can record your favorite FTA programs and play 'em back later.
Available in most stores, and certainly by mail.
Goes well with the amplifier system, above.
See the link for more specs.

Get yourself a spindle of cheap media, and a pile of paper sleeves, and go at it!
Oh, you may need to supply your own batteries for the remote.

Anole
Does the unit have a tuner in it? I assume just analog but still thats a heckuva bargain :)

"does it have a tuner?" . . . uhhh...
Why yes, I believe it does have an analog tuner. (last thing I would use) :)
And a sticker on the shelf warns that it doesn't have a digital tuner and may be obsolete in a year or two.

I have used my recorder only a little, and so far the L1 or line one input has gotten a work out.
I think it has an L2, too (front panel, maybe?)

Using the remote to poke in the name of each recording is ... fun , to say the least.
Having to "finalize" the disc when you are done takes about three minutes.
Neither is really hard to do.
I'm sure when I've done a few more discs, I won't need to have the manual open while I do it.

I didnt know if it did or not. I know analog will be obsolete (supposedly) in a couple years but that is still a heckuva bargain

trido it may be the same, online, but unless they are offering free shipping for about 35lbs or so, I don't see the point.
The picture in this ad looks exactly like the system I bought in January and says reg price is 249.99 in store. Yamaha rec model# HTR-5920.

Concerning the analog tuner built into the DVD recorder, it is worth noting that only OTA analog will cease to exist in 2009.... it is safe to assume that analog CATV will persist for some time after, although the cable companies are itching to get rid of as many analog channels as they can get by with to reuse the bandwidth for digital channels :)

Hey Anole!

Does this recorder act as a player as well?

Can you just hook it up and use it as a dvd player, and then record something if you want to?

I know the question sounds dumb, but I won't know unless I ask.

Thanks,

Fred

wealth of tuners/players to choose from

Does this recorder act as a player as well?
My new TV has about 10 inputs.
The composite video and audio line from one FTA receiver just goes directly through the R/S DVD recorder.
So, as I look at it, ya select Composite #2 for FTA, -or- for test-playing DVDs made from it.

That being the newest hardware added, I don't normally think to play a DVD in it, but as Iceberg says, it'll sure do the job.
Normally, there's a blank DVD in the recorder, in case I get an urge for an immediate recording.
One button-press will initiate recording, . . . if you can find the proper remote and hit the correct button. :)

Normally, I'd put a disc in the new up-converting RCA DRC290, 5-disc changer I just got.
Prior to that, the hi fi amplifier with its 3-disc changer would have been the player of choice.
That's the result of not having a unified plan when you put together your a/v hardware.

The reason I kidded Iceberg above about whether or not the DVD recorder has a tuner is because I have three other tuner sources:
- off-the-air in hi def right on the new TV
- Dish satellite through a PVR
- FTA through the above DVD recorder
The point being, whether the DVD recorder had yet another tuner , was just the last thing I needed to think about!
And the same applies to playing the discs.

I'm sure many of you have far more complicated and convoluted set-ups.
For the readers who don't know about the equipment on-line at the Iceberg or Linuxman homes, let's just say it makes my little lash-up pale in comparison!
This is about all I can handle for now. :)

. . . and what the heck am I going to do with the other five inputs? . . .
Don't tell me: "Plant more dishes!" ?

if you can find the proper remote and hit the correct button.

I have much the same problem with all my remotes. My wife even sewed a special holder when I had 7 that hangs from the shelf next to my couch. She needs to add a lower level to it now. :)

My neighbor across the street tells me that I need to buy an equipment rack instead of having them all stacked on top of each other. But what the heck!

No one is perfect. At least I know where all the wires go because I marked them all as I put them in.

Thanks to you and Iceberg for the answer about it playing. I guess I'll make a trip to the local RS and pick one up. My DVD player is getting close to end of life. I couldn't buy a player for the cost of this recorder/player.

Thanks to the OP for the tip on the Home Theatre sale and thanks to Anole for the tip on the recorder.

Fred

I got the last one they had except the display at the local RS.

The first thing I'm going to do is to hook it up and record about 10 hours off my D* PVR-501 that I unhooked about 2 months ago. Then I can clean that hard drive off, and sell it.

Then I will put it in the system with all the other toys. :D
