The Hockey News is joining forces with a mobile marketing company in an effort to reach hockey fans.
Known as one of North America's leading hockey publications, The Hockey News is published by Transcontinental Media G.P., a large print media group based in Canada.
In the aftermath of the year-long NHL lockout, The Hockey News was looking for ways to revitalize itself by increasing its visibility, driving new subscriptions and reaching out to a younger audience.
Traditionally, subscribers have responded by standard direct response vehicles, such as business reply, Internet and phone, the partners describe.
Such response methods can have limitations when used in live event, digital signage, product sampling or outdoor advertising campaigns. SMS (short message service) will now give the potential reader the ability to act on impulse and subscribe immediately.
"In today's business environment we need to be on the leading edge of technology to communicate and advertise to our potential audience," says Gerald McGroarty, Publisher of The Hockey News. "This agreement with g8wave will allow us to capitalize on live event opportunities with text messaging and engage our product with a targeted audience instantly."
The Hockey News will launch this new channel of subscribing with selected NHL teams through in-arena promotions during the 2005-2006 NHL season. This is the first step in gauging reader interest in mobile campaigns, and a springboard to more and different mobile services from The Hockey News.
g8wave ("gatewave") is a mobile marketing and m-commerce company and a new division of the forty year-old Phoenix Media/Communications Group. The company operates both domestically and overseas, with offices in Boston and London.
The Hockey News was founded in 1947 and publishes 42 issues a year. The Hockey News is published by Transcontinental Media G.P., the fourth-largest print media group in Canada, with annual revenues of $500 million and more than 3,000 employees. Transcontinental Inc., a leading publisher of consumer magazines in Canada and the country's second largest publisher of regional and community newspapers, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transcontinental Group, a Canadian Corporation whose stocks are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbols GRT.A and GRT.B.
