Hi, I'm a newbie to this FTA stuff. I currently have DirecTV and intend on keeping it. I would like to add a FTA receiver to simply add more channels to my current programming. The housing association where I live requires that we use a shared dish for DirecTV. This means I will not have any access to the dish and, therefore, can not move it or point it in another direction. Will this prevent me from truly being able to use an FTA receiver effectively?

yes | no | maybe

There is really nothing FTA available through your DirecTV dish , anyway.
...even if you did repoint it.

I believe there are federal laws which do allow you to put up to a 1 meter (39 inch) dish on property that's specifically reserved for you (not common area).
You can't put it permanently on the building or any existing structures, if you live in an apartment or multi-dwelling residence.

The full story is too long to recount here, but someone should be along shortly with a link giving more info.
