As a national retailer we see this every time a city looses a local channel or 2.
People get all up in arms over it, they say their provider isn’t fulfilling their agreement, they are paying for something they are not getting and want to cancel.
Most of the time it’s a customer looking for a discount.
But what I have a hard time believing is do some peoples lives revolve around 1 or 2 fricken channels?
I like Dish Networks approach. They leave the guide info up, the channel name and substitute the programming.
It cuts out 90% of the calls from customers looking for a discount because they see the channel is down.
Only the people who watch the channel know something is wrong.
They have the same term length as satellite does, typically about 3 years. Where did you get the idea that they have some special longer term deals on cable?
I agree with the comment about the Dish Network approach. I have quite a few recordings scheduled for my DNS CBS channels 390 and 391 and when DTV replaced New York and Los Angeles with Washington and San Diego, my recordings still took place as scheduled. The substitute channels approach results in the guide still be correct and the customer hardly noticing any change.
These new carriage agreements are more expensive, but also go longer term. Neither side wants to renegotiate in a few years.
Well there is this 10 year agreement between CBS and Comcast.

Now that deal is ending in 2020, but it was a long term deal.
We don't know how long the current agreement between CBS and Directv was. Maybe CBS likes long term agreements, but everything I've seen from local station groups like Sinclair, Nexstar, Gray and so on indicate those agreements have generally been terms of around three years or so.
Regardless, if Comcast is working with an agreement that has been in force since 2010, they are paying pennies for the CBS O&O channels, and CBS will no doubt be demanding $3 - $4 from Comcast next year. At least with the shorter agreements providers have been getting hit for "only" a 300% or so increase, but a 10 year catchup will be more like a 3000% increase! Sounds like a major dispute to come for next year...

I can get the CBS out of Albany, NY with my antenna. But guess I'll have to record CBS Sports Network's auto Racing coverage at my parents house. When Time Warner/CBS had a blackout a few years ago my parents had to come to my house to see CBS.(but I bought them an indoor antenna).

Showtime has a deal separate to CBS's local channels, CBS Sports Network and Smithsonian Network. CBS also owns Pop TV as well (they had only half ownership of the network along with Lionsgate until this past March when Lionsgate sold their half ownership of the network to CBS).
i don't know when the deals with Showtime and Pop TV ends, but if it ends in the next few months, then CBS could do a full on bundle with all of networks they own.
Nine of the cities where CBS may go dark at midnight are available to DTV subscribers with the Locast app. I wonder how big a boost their donations will get if the dispute lasts more than a few days... 
Remember when you could bundle the stuperststions for like $3 more.
