Here Comes Oppo!

Even though I have just recently bought a blu ray player, I'm very excited for this player to come out. I have always been a fan of Oppo. I'll even buy one if I can get my hands on one. :)

price tag is very much in line with what I expected and tempting based on the full feature set.

I will wait however for the fully tested product to be on the shelves before I look for one.

Beats $800. Glad to see it will support DVD-Audio out the gate. Doesn't say anything about CDs, but I'll assume it supports CDs, and hopefully VCDs. And which DVD formats will it support? I gather we'll know soon.

But I guess I'll wait until things shake out next year before laying any money down.

How long does that usually take for a product like this?
I don't think anyone can really answer that. But if they do come out with a universal player that does what they say it'll do at that price point, they're going to have a huge success on their hands. One other thing about Oppo.....The price will remain firm. I sincerely doubt that you'll see any price reductions with this player.

As good as Oppo players have been in the past, I'd sit on the sidelines until all the bugs are worked out also. Their customer service is known to be excellent, but I don't want to buy a player because they have excellent customer service....I'd rather have an excellent product and never have to use customer service. I'm sure they'll have a hit on their hands, though.

Oppo BDP-83 Early Adoption program is due to start about March 3rd for 50 lucky people, with 100 getting the opportunity a week or two later.
I wonder how long it will take to satisfy the other 10,000 people!!!

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Player Early Adoption Program said:
OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player EAP

Dear ,

We would like to thank you for the tremendous feedback that we have received from the community in response to our first BDP-83 Blu-ray player notification update. There were many great comments, suggestions and concerns which we will try to address in the release of the BDP-83. In particular, we would like to address the Early Adoption Program.

We have decided to take a democratic, by-the-people approach to the implementation of the Early Adoption Program. For the initial batch we will randomly choose 50 customers to participate in the Early Adoption Program. These 50 customers will have the opportunity to purchase the BDP-83 for $499 before the official release. After using the player for about a week, they will be required to vote on whether the program should be expanded or suspended based on end-user experiences. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes in favor of expanding the program, we will expand the Early Adoption Program by another 100 randomly chosen customers. The player will be shipped with a pre-production firmware version. Firmware updates will be available from time to time.

The initial 50 Early Adoption Customers will be chosen no later than February 25th using the random number generator at random.org. After being contacted by us, the customer must place the order no later than 3pm February 27th Pacific Time; otherwise the opportunity to participate will be passed on to another customer. A simple "Yes" or "No" vote on whether to expand the program needs to be cast no later than March 15th.

Terms and conditions for the Early Adoption Program, as well as the current program status, can be found at our web site:
OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player

We would also like to take this time to update you on the status of BDP-83 developments. The last two months have been very fruitful, as the player now supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0) and can internally decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DVD-Audio has yet to be implemented through firmware, but we are working diligently on this feature. A preliminary features and specifications list will be available on our web site on Tuesday March 3rd.

Opt-Out:

If you are still interested in receiving communications about the BDP-83 and participating in the Early Adoption Program, no further action is necessary. Otherwise, please click on the SafeUnsubscribe link below to decline participation and to opt out of any further e-mail communications regarding the BDP-83.

Pretty much confirms the early release to a "lucky" 50 willing to pay the $500 tag. Note the info about DVD-A.

Lottery drawing is TODAY but there may still be time to get in. I signed up and commented that I can make a direct comparision w/ my Sony 550 (not that that would make any difference), but I'm not really sure I want to pony-up another $500. Maybe...

Yes, I got it too. Mixed feelings about what I'd do if I'm among the Chosen. It really is of little use to me without DVD-A. Do I trust that it will be successfully deployed?

Any OPPO BD beta testers here ??

I was just wondering if anyone in this forum was one of the "Lucky 50" who will get a first crack at the beta units? If so, when will you get it, and more importantly, post a review here ??

TIA...

Well, since I haven't heard from them, I can assume I wasn't one of the chosen few. Probably for the best. I think it's a safe bet that they'll get DVD-A working, but I'd rather wait until that feature is actually shipping.

According to what I've seen and heard, the "lucky 50" were chosen and the units were sent out last week. They're supposedly going to let the chosen few play with the new units for about a week and they will then vote on whether to allow an additional 50 to receive units for more beta testing or just wait until the rest of the minor bugs are worked out and then start selling them.

I'm one of the 50 and the unit performs very well.
They've found a few bugs, however nothing to stop the program to continue on.
I believe it should be fully released now.
The Decoding of DVD-Audio can be released later, however I think Oppo wants this feature at release time.
The next step is 100 new EAP.

I can replace my PS3 and JVC DVD-A player with this. I'll have one device to play all flavors of CD, almost all flavors of DVD (can't even hope for -RAM), BD, SACD & DVD-A. And with all done to a high level of performance.

Yep, that's worth extra bucks to me.

Now my only question would be how smoothly the picture flows while doing fast searching- say at 2x, 5x to 10x. I suspect OPPO will do it well, unlike some other players I've had.
