I am setting up a motorized dish. I am using USALS. Do I aim the dish due south or do I still aim at my south satellite? If I am at my south satellite, how does the USALS software know where I am starting from on the arc??

You point the motor south and let the receiver, using USALS, move it to your True South Satellite (or any other satellite). You have to program the receiver, with your location (latitude/longitude), and that's how it knows where it is and where to go. Good Luck!

OK , first , get the pole / pipe 100% plumb .

Mount the motor to the pole pointing 100% due south . Adjust the motor bracket scale to your LATATUDE .

Mount the dish on the motor arm 100% due douth . Set your dish ELEVATION as close as you can , there should be a chart that came with the motor , & it depends on your latatude .

Set up the menues in the receiver to your due south Ku sat . If it is a linear polorized sat , you must have a linear LNBF . If it is a circular polorized sat , try an old DTV or DN LNBF ( altjough you may be able to catch a few channels with a linear LNBF ) .

Command the moter , with USALS , to move to the due south sat .

Tweek the installation by swing the motor / dish assembly slightly east - west and by moving the dish slightly up - down . Leave the adjustment on the dish motor bracket alone .

Now , go hunt down the rest of the sats .

Which motor are using and what is your Zip code? Then we can get detailed for your setup.

My zip code is 02494 (near Boston).
My motor is the Jaeger Superjack DG 120+.

Also, while I have your wisdom-- I set up the motor and mounted the dish today. I used a homemade mount to lesssen the weight of the dish and the stress on the motor. The motor is able to move the dish just fine, however, I cannot seem to tighten the motor's screws enough to keep the motor and dish elevated; in other words, I tighten all 4 screws as hard as I can on the two sides of the motor and the darn dish keeps slipping. Is there someway to prevent this?? My hands are killing me from titghtening bolts!
Thanks a million!!!

It did occur to me to use star washers--do you think they will work? Is there anything else along those lines which you can recommend??
Many thanks!

Wescopc--are you there?

My zip code is 02494 (near Boston).

Are they U bolts that you are tightening? Are you sure you are not crushing the tube or bending the brackets? I ended up cutting off the top section of my mast and welding on a 1/8" wall tube to mount the motor. The muffler tubing thin mast that comes with Digiwave dishes is very easy to crush while tightening the motor mount.

Yes I am back, I have been driving back from the Oregon coast.

I have spent some time trying to locate a PDF manual for your DG120. No luck!
I hope you have the manual. You will need to find the formula for setting your dish elevation after subtracting the declination from the angle of the bent shaft of your motor. Probably 30°-6.5°=33.5°. But you will need to make certain of the 30° number.
I have seen pictures with the shaft pointed up and pictures with it pointed down. I think it points down like a SG-2100. I know it is late for you now on the EDT. But if you are still up, confirm the shaft angle and we will take it one step at a time.

WESCOPC-- the motor came with essentially no instructions. I do not know the angle you asked for. Can you give me a step-by-step (using 1.2 and not USALS) without it? I can find my south satelllite AMC6 and peak it as a starting point, can't I?

It's not slippping where the motor mounts to the tube--it's slipping in it's own harness--in other words, once I set the elevation of the motor's tube and then attach the dish, the weight of the dish makes the motor slip in its mount and fail to hold the elevation setting. ANy ideas as to how to keep it in place??

I use a signal meter and watch the signal strength , bumping the motor either east or west . Then blind scan after peaking . Compare the channels you get with those listed on lyngsat.com , for the various sats .

When you find a sat , save it as a numeric value unique to that sat .

The problem is that you need to scan both elevation and azimuth. Much like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Setting the elevation of the motor will be either by latitude marks or elevation marks. This will need to be set first. You mention that the bolts don't clamp well enough, try the star washers mention by SatelliteAV. If you have latitude marks - set the motor to your latitude of 42.3° if you have elevation marks - set the motor to 47.7°.

If you know the offset angle of your dish, you would be able to get it close by using an inclineometer, your dish will need to look at +/-42° (found at GeoSatFinder - Satellite Finder Calculator © Satellite AV for your TS satellite). To get your dish elevation setting close, take 42° less your dish offset.

I have never setup a motor using just 1.2 - I have only used USALS.

So goes the first step, let me know how it goes.

DG-120

1.2 is actually easy to use just not as easy as USALS
once the dg-120 is setup with TS you will walk the dish left or right (east or west) using live transponders until you get a signal. once there tweak & save then off to the next one.
