 Good morning,i have a few questions that i hope someone can help me with.We went out the other day and bought a new H-10 reciever ,[ we had the old Direct TV reciever for the last 5 years], The idea behind this move was so that we could get surround sound[of the direct satellite].Came home hooked up and activated the new reciever. The audio is great, sounds real good, nice, hooked up the optical audio to the amp ,wonderfull. Im sitting there looking at the picture and im thinking that it looks not as clear as the old $49.00 direct reciever. We are still using the same dish that we had forever [round] and our tv is not digital. Did we screw up and waste $200.00 , would getting a new dish help[20x18], or would we be wasting more monney. Like i said the audio is great, and the picture is [ok] is there anny point in getting a new dish, or do we just wait till we can upgrade to digital TV, then get the new dish. Thanks for any input.

Welcome! This post probably needs to be moved to the DirecTV forum, a mod should be along shortly to make the move. Once moved I'm positive you'll get the answer you need!

Moved thread to the DirecTV forum.

Welcome to Satelliteguys!
Just wondering if you used the same video hook-up? You should be using the S-Video jacks on your TV and Satellite receiver if possible. You should never really use the "channel 3" RF option unless you have no choice.
See ya

Thanks Tony, yes i did use the S Video conection, do you think a new dish would improve picture quality, then the weakest link would be the TV. I have all conections running through my amplifier [Pioneer VSX DB12] i guess it should handel it, its not the top of the line, but its not the cheapest amp either.Thank`s any and all input would be appreciated.

A Phaze 3 dish would only Help if you are going HD.

Run your cables straight to the Tv bypassing the AMP, atleast the video and see it that helps.

gob,

try running the s-video directly to the tv and see if pic quality improves. then post your results.

BTW, leave the optical and rca jacks on the pioneer reciever, just move the s-video.

also, why would you buy an H-10 and use a round dish?????????

Exactly what I said?

G.O.B. said he ONLY wanted it for the Surround Sound, he does not have a HDTV.

tate,

hell for $20 and shipping i would have sent him a RCA 440 or a hughes gold series, they are both dolby digital and both multi sat ready. he would not have gotten HD, but he does not have HD any way. im not sure of the hughes gold BUT the RCA 440 HAS optical out.

Welcome to the forums G.O.B.! :welcome

If you had purchased the new receiver, the H20, I would not consider it a waste of money; but I would suggest some alternatives that would cost you less:

First, if you still can, return the H10. While it will likely still work for years to come, it is not on D*'s future and already obsolete.

Second, get the HD upgrade. It will cost you $11/month for a few months--but you will save $200 on the H20 in the form of a rebate! Plus you get at least the 3lnb dish. (Might cost you $15 for the install, but if you've been a good D* customer for some time that should be the most you have to pay.) And who knows, you might like the HD package enough to keep it...

Third, see if you can get the H20 from ValueElectonics. They have good deals for readers of these forums.

Happy Holidays,
Tom
