Can anyone tell me if the new Ka sats at 99 and 103 have a nation wide footprint at all. I live in an area that does not yet have local HD on the Ka birds. I am just trying to set up my at9 dish and H20 reciever. I want to be ready if and when DTV turns anything new on. I was hoping that they had a transponder active so that anyone in the country could at least align a dish. A 2nd question, is does anyone who is getting a signal from them (99,103) know if there is a free test channel like channel 101 that lets check the picture. If so, what is the channel number?

We don't yet know all the TPs and frequencies.
Lyngsat says spot-beam only.
http://www.lyngsat.com/space1.html
But that's not to say it's correct.

Align your dish for the 101 and 119 and if you get those, chances are you'll only need slight adjustment for the 99 and 103 later on.
Even the Installer Manual for the AT9 dish says to aim for the 101.
(It also says use an external signal meter as using a receiver is not as precise.)

the spaceway twins are all spot beams.

the reason for the 101 is simple, if you dont hit the 101 the ird will not "lock" and activation is not possible. this is true of ALL directv irds.

also, test channels are:

101 490- 491+
110 494 all
119 492- 493+
72.5 496 all
95 497
macrovision 498

my guess would be 495 and 499

Welcome to the forums, OneBigJedi!

My understanding is the spot beams can be as big as CONUS if needed and that there is one transponder on 103 lit up for everyone. I think its 16--but you can test that for us. :)

Cheers,
Tom

You need 101 available to authorize the receiver but the instructions to point at 101 are to get the antenna precisely aligned with all the sats. You can’t align the dish on a Ka bird and get satisfactory results.

There are no test channels for the 99/103 birds. 495 used to be the odd txp test channel for the 72.5 bird, and 499 isn't a channel.
