HD receiver box coupled to a standard tv

I asked this question before but only got one response and I think I need to know more... I am about to order D* and am leaning toward going ahead and getting an HD receiver even though we are currently shopping for but haven't yet bought an HD capable monitor/tv. Assuming I still have my standard tv when I get this HD receiver, will the HD receiver still be able to display a viewable picture on my standard tv??? Or must I have the HD monitor/tv in place when I hook up the HD receiver??? Or should I just start out with a standard receiver and upgrade later to the HD receiver??? What are the pros and cons of doing one or the other??? Any help would be appreciated... thanks.... diitto...

You can do this via the Svideo output...and adjust your picture with the Screen format... (this is on Samsung the D* branded box should be same)

I'm using the HR10-250 with a Sony 27 inch SD TV. The Video Output Format was set to 480i by the installer. This is the setting used for SD viewing.
I think it's a pretty good picture.
