HD-DVR without service?

Is it possible to take a DirecTv HD-DVR receiver with atsc tuner, and use it as a DVR for HD locals, without subscribing to anything from DirecTV?

No. (At least the newer ones)
Without a subscription D* has the DVR functions turned off.

As far as I know the HR10-250 was the last DVR that could use the ATSC tuner without a subscription but the TiVo didn't work without a subscription.

I would have guess that the last one would have been before the D* branded ones came along, but thats just a guess.
