I was wondering if there was any way to turn a computer into an hd dvr that would work with a 211 receiver. I have a pc that I am upgrading and was wondering if any of the pvr cards out there would record stuff off of my 211. I've seen the ones that let you record stuff OTA but I only get a few OTA channels. I would love to be able to record Dish stuff and put it on DVD. Any help would be appreciated.

You would also have to employ the control VCR function built in to the 211

honestly it'll be a PITA and cost you quite a bit of money, you'll need a computer to dedicate to it, for playback and recording... you'll end up buying/building a computer, capture card(s), hard drive(s), decent graphics card (tuning it for displays can be major PITA)... in the end you'd have a nice HTPC allowing you to playback anything (providing you've bought a decent processor if you want full quality 1080i HD) which can also play games and other stuff...

These guys can install a mod into your receiver to allow you to record via firewire to your PC. Note, if you have a leased receiver, you probably dont want to do this

I use there solution for c-band and it works very well. Being able to archive HD content is great. I think the connectivity for all platforms is USB 2.0 rather than firewire.
The R5000 is via firewire.

It says that they can modify a 6000, 411, and ViP211. It is expensive to do it though.
Let's say you want to do a 211. You have to purchase it at $369, and the modification costs something like $650. They have 411s in stock, and they can sell you a new, modified unit for $900.
The cool thing about it is that if you turn your PC into a DVR, you don't have to subscribe to locals to get guide data, so you can save $6/mo. You don't have to pay the DVR fee, so you can save about $12/mo, and archive for personal use as much as you want to.
This is legal, but only if you don't abuse it by distributing content.
