I thought we have already established that the total number of HD format sales is still extremely insignificant, in the grand scheme of things... so how can 30% of 1/3 of that total be considered significant?

Keep in mind that the people doing this are the same early adopters (like us) that are all over the internet debating this stuff. If even 5% of "average" consumers used those features, I'd be shocked.

80k means obviously Videoscan is full of it when they say Transformers only sold 85k copies. Paramount/Dreamworks likely sold over 200k copies of that loud piece of crap by now.
