You will not like the answer. It is too full or too many recordings are scheduled. That is all that slows it down. Clear & Delete everything, will restore performance. I know, it stinks, but that is all you can do.

The wife has been complaining about it. Our R10 seems to be fuller yet doesn't run nearly as slow. I know that's because the software is newer.

I believe the R10 also has a more powerful processor and more RAM. You could check the TiVo Community, but I am sure they will offer the same.
I think it's just that the V6 software is that much better then what's stuck on the HR10-250's. The old code in the SD D* Tivo's also ran slow the more SP's that you had set up.
Hack the thing. Add another hard drive. Start extracting the programs. All of these will make it faster
