Despite launching back in April, HBO's streaming service HBO Now is still only available through select retail partners. You can't buy HBO Now from HBO -- you have to either buy it via a hardware partner (Apple) or through two of HBO's partner ISPs (either Verizon or Cablevision). So far other ISPs have been hesitant to sign up to sell the service, and this week HBO CEO Richard Plepler said it's because they're afraid to cannibalize their existing TV services.

Speaking at a conference this week, Plepler criticized companies like Comcast for being "myopic" and unable to see how HBO Now can drive value to their own broadband services.

"If you’re Brian (Roberts) and you have 6 million broadband subs (Comcast actually has around 23 million broadband users, -Ed.), why would you not bundle HBO and share that revenue with us? Why would you give up that real estate and not be paid for it?"
