Is there any way to swap out the existing hard drive of a 5900 with a larger drive to increase the storage capacity? If not, is there any way to dump the contents to another drive (IE like a back up) and then, later on, reload the contents?

I know the answer to that, but this forum would consider it "hack talk" so I cannot answer it. I'll try without involving anything they would call "hacking"
There is a Yahoo group that will teach you how to remove the HD, put it in your PC and burn a DVD from the recordings. I forgot the name, but you can search for it on Google.
You probably will not be able to replace the 5900 with a larger HD because the current firmware will not support a larger HD. That was my understanding when I was investigating the matter 6 months ago.
I was considering upgrading a 5100 to a 5900, but I found a good deal on a 5900. so I just sold the 5100.
