Halo Reach

By Austin Verburg

Bungie Studios, game developers behind the Halo franchise, will be releasing a new title, “Halo: Reach” on Sep 14.
“Halo: Reach” will be a prequel to the original Halo trilogy, portraying events that lead up to the first game, “Halo: Combat Evolved”. The campaign will follow the story of Noble Team, a group of military super soldiers known as Spartans.

When the planet Reach is invaded by The Covenant, a collection of alien species whose religion claims the human race is a plague which must be wiped from the galaxy, Noble Team must take the mission of defending the planet and insuring that the Covenant does not discover the location of Earth. On May 3, 2010, a Beta was released on Xbox Live which allowed gamers to test Halo:
Reach’s multiplayer. This Beta was only accessable to anyone who owned a copy of “Halo 3: ODST”, a game released Sep 2009. The Beta allowed for many of the game’s competitive multiplayer features to be tested, such as new game playlists, as well as the classic playlists brought over from “Halo 3”.

Also tested were changes in the game play, such as the addition of armor abilities such as sprint and the jetpack. Many new weapons were added as well.

All features from the beta will be returning improved, as well as many new things not seen in the Beta.
Returning from “Halo 3” is the game’s forge mode, which allowed for players to modify objects in each multiplayer level.
However, the forge mode in “Halo: Reach” has been improved in order to allow for more customization, giving players the ability to edit walls, as well as improving previous editing tools to make placement of objects and walls much easier.

Firefight from “Halo 3: ODST”, which let the player fight endless waves of alien enemies, also returns improved. As opposed to its previous version, Firefight in “Halo: Reach” will allow for players to edit what types of enemies you fight, as well as the weapons you fight them with. Another change is the new Firefight matchmaking option, which matches you with teammates equal in skill to fight along side you. Game editions for “Halo: Reach” include Standard Edition, which includes only the game. Limited Edition includes reading material that opens up secrets about the Halo universe, as well as a few in-game armors. Legendary Edition includes everything from Limited Edition, as well as more armors, and a collectable statue of Noble Team.

Got this in my Gamefly queue. I hope the SP campaign isn't as short and schizo as it was in ODST...

Just got my new harddrive for the new xbox 360s today.

Pre-ordered this game while I was there, Gamestop gives you special armor and helmet for the preorder.

Been playing Halo3 all weekend long, getting the skills back in order. :D

Less then 11 hours to go!

Just heard this is the final game for Halo.

Can't wait to see how good the Forge Editor is for this game, with the ability to edit walls, seems like a huge improvement. Multi-player looks great, as well as jet packs.

Was at Blockbuster this AM and saw they had a dozen copies for rent so I picked up one on my Game pass.

This will be my first experience with this so I can attempt to see what all the hype is about.

How long do you think it will take me to come up to speed on this game? If its a shooter game- well lets just say I'm much better in real combat than these games. Same goes for driving a car. :D

In this Game does HALO have anything to do with High Altitude Low Ox skydiving?

Also- do real gamers actually get dressed up in these toy helmets to play these games? I'm not taking about little kids as I can understand them doing that.

Ended up just buying a copy after my copy didn't come in via Gamefly. Got a good deal with Gamestop (surprisingly) trading in games so I actually paid $1.59 for it. Looking forward to the campaign and possibly playing with others in it online.

My first impressions so far, Multiplayer is loads of fun. The new jetpacks, and abilities are a very nice feature. After it's all said and done, I think multiplayer is what will give this game a long life.

The guns are awesome and I like the new ones and the new changes to the old ones.

You can Sprint! .....thank you Bungie.

So far the story line has been pretty good, flying through it. Playing with my son and brother, it's seems like normal mode is fairly easy for us.

Overall I'm really enjoying this game, it's been awhile since I was excited about a game.

9.5/10

Just spent a couple hours with it and so far I'm not impressed with the fact it appears to just be another soldier on a recon S&D mission. Probably need to get into it more, but I'm ready to return it to Blockbuster for the weekend. Better to let someone rent it who really enjoys this space cowboy like game. Don't get me wrong, the CGI is great and they put a lot of effort into it but just seems to be a variation of another war battle game. What I liked best about Reach is just exploring all the passageways and the buildings. Music and SFX placement in the 5.1 sound theater is also done very well, one of the best I have seen.

Picked it up for the kids today. I may have to check this one out myself. Sick of getting my sorry 46 yr old $ss getting handed to me playing MW2.

So far I'm enjoying the SP campaign, although the difficulty is making my ass a bit sore. All the reviewers seemed to recommend playing the game on Heroic for the first run through for Halo veterans such as myself (basically the "Hard" difficulty) and the frustration levels can mount rather quickly. Still, none of the challenges feel unbeatable and it does force you to think in creative ways to get past particular areas, as opposed to just grinding over and over and hoping you get lucky.
