On June 8, 2002, arguably the greatest single-day for sports I can ever recall happened.
The following all occured in a span of 24 hours:
-War Emblem tried (and failed) to win a Triple Crown
-Venus and Serena Williams in the French Open final (Serena won)
-Barry Bonds (pre-steroid accusations) went into Yankee Stadium- and homered
-Curt Schilling (then w/Arizona) outdueled future teammate Pedro Martinez in a battle of unbeaten pitchers
-Detroit played Carolina in game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals (If Jimbo reads this, that was the game where Igor Larionov scored in overtime after a long, long series of overtimes)
-World Cup Soccer
-The Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight in Memphis
All those events can fill up an entire week- that was one DAY.
Sunday wasn't too bad either- one of the last NBA Finals games ever on NBC (That was when the Shaq-Kobe Lakers (when nothing was going wrong) swept the Nets to complete the threepeat), and that was the close game, the one the Nets nearly won, BTW
That was a great sports weekend back then.
Can YOU guys recall any other great sports weekends- when both Saturday and Sunday had lots of sports greatness?
