I just wanted to let others know about a useful software tool to convert your video files to watch on your Tivo, as well as iPod. The bonus is that it's free!!!
It's called Videora Tivo Converter. You can download it from this website:
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/TiVo/
I have converted files with the extensions .avi and .divx to a .mpg format readable by TiVo. (It says that it can do others like .vob, but I haven't tried them yet.) It's pretty painless and easy to use. You specify the file you want to convert and where to place it when done.
To get the converted file to your TiVo, you need to have a series 2 network TiVo with the TiVo desktop software installed on your pc. You go into your TiVo recorder under the "Now Playing" list and you should see your networked files there to download to your TiVo harddrive.
Another feature is that it can do what's called ITVCasting for finding and downloading videos from the internet by utilizing BitTorrent and RSS technology.
