In a developing story, Google is expected to announce the launch of the Google Video Store during a keynote presentation late Friday afternoon at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The new service, which is expected to be built out of Google's existing video search product, is said to allow users to both purchase and rent videos for viewing on their PCs. While details are few at this point, various published reports have listed both CBS and the NBA as potential content partners in the new venture.
Launched roughly a year ago, Google video search is currently still in beta form. The site has steadily seen its traffic increase over that time--mostly through featuring a variety of free, viral video clips.
According to Nielsen/NetRatings, the site's unique visitors grew by 58 percent from October 2005 to November, reaching 2.6 million unique visitors. That figure accounts for approximately 3 percent of Google's total traffic.
