[The Forum software won't let me reply in the relevant thread:

because it is over a year old, so I am starting a new thread.]

I bought a globecast receiver off e-bay and had absolutely no problems slaving it to my other receivers, Satwork 3688 or Fortec ultra lifetime, to move my dish. Globecast was good enough to re-activate the smart card that came with it at no extra charge, and allow me to subscribe to setanta sports. then sent me an updated smart card. (blue) and offered to upgrade the software on the receiver and the only cost to me was postage to send it to them. The globecast was a model de997. By the time i got it back my subscription to setanta had lapsed. I used it with a wingard 76 dish and an ivacon .o3 lnb. because it does not blind or smart search you have to enter the transponder freq, and sr manually. but you can use it on multiple satellites.
I just wanted to give the following update for Forum or Google searchers about Globecast and/or Setanta.
The situation has changed 180 degrees at Globecast since Neil's post.
Globecast requires:
- Globecast SE830 receiver (the current model). No earlier Globecast receivers (such as the aforementioned DE997) are allowed and Globecast will do nothing for you if buy one. They can be used as paperweights, doorstops, boat anchors or landfill.
- Globecast requires the V2 smartcard (blue on front, V2 on back), and will probably charge you $75 to replace the earlier smartcard.
Pictures of the SE830 and the V2 smartcard can be found in this thread:

Unfortunately, when Globecast replaced the DE997 receivers and the earlier smartcards, they were too cheap to require the subscribers to send back the old equipment. As a result, there are hordes of Denebian slime molds who are selling the older receivers and older smartcards on ebay. Globecast does not have any information on their web site about the receiver and smartcard situations, with the result that many innocent people are being ripped off.

By the way, other scams I see on ebay, are people selling the current model SE830 receiver with either the old smartcard or with no smartcard. They will trumpet "Brand New Current Model" but either not mention the smartcard in the list of included features, or else will trumpt that it is included, but not mention that it is the old one.

PS Also note that I have talked to people who owned the DE997 and earlier Globecast receivers, and they are trash - with frequent problems like freezes - they are not even worth buying for $10 as FTA receivers.

Thanks for your message above.

I just want to point out that the GlobeCast receivers and access cards that Sadoun sells on our website or on our eBay store are the latest and greatest from GlobeCast.

Yes, the Sadoun receivers (and those from any authorized Globecast dealers) are brand new, come with the new smartcards, and you should be able to subscribe as soon as you hook up.

I just want to post a warning in terms of used Globecast equipment on ebay, because some older messages on this Forum indicated that people were able to buy older Globecast receivers on ebay for relatively little, and use them, and this has now changed (as detailed in the first post).

If it is a DVR that records analog signals (the video output of the satellite receiver), then you can hook it up to any video device (just like a VCR).

If it is a Dish Network DVR or a DirecTV DVR or a Digital Cable DVR, then it will only work with those systems (since it records the digital signal internally).
