ESPN - Georgia president: Schools need to regain control of postseason - College Football
The president of the University of Georgia is calling for an eight-team playoff system for college football's top division, saying the Bowl Championship Series -- which left Georgia out of its championship game -- has become a "beauty contest largely stage-managed by the networks."
I think this is directed at the Rose Bowl.
"If one of those bowls chooses not to participate, another game could be found to fill the void," he said.
While I do think Georgia needs to quit whining about the national championship since they couldn't even win their own division in their own conference, maybe all this playoff talk will get us somewhere.

Hopefully so. And I too think Georgia should STFU and count their blessings. Maybe the Auburn and Florida they beat at the end of a tough schedule wouldn't have been so easy to beat healthy. Georgia had an easy schedule this year based on SEC standards.

Time to kill the BCS, drop the Frito-Lay/CarQuest/BlockBuster prefix from the bowl games, and go back to the good old fashioned bowl system...with all games being played no later than New Years Day.

The eight team playoff is only slightly less stupid than the BCS.

Sorry, but if you think the university presidents are gonna give up the $$$$ that those sponsors dish out, your crazy.

Your right. Georgia is whinning because they could not play for the championship. I have not seen USC gripe and they have just as much to complain as Georgia.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they go to the BCS and away from that "good old fashioned bowl system" because of all of the outcry about it? I don't think there's any going back at this point... they either move forward (to a playoff) or continue to flail around in the muck, tweaking the existing system like they have been.

I am quite certain college football will continue to be sold to the highest bidder(s), but that doesn't make it right. Football is a brutal sport and we're talking about college students...not highly-paid professional athletes. What's wrong with wanting to see University leadership stress academics and graduation rates over some network executives desire to break these kids by playing a 14-16 game schedule?

Its college football not the NFL. They do not need a champion. Go back to the old system. The amount of bowl games is ridiculous and BORING!!!!!!!!

And I agree with you 1000%....but that is a gravy train that will NOT be given up. We are talking dollar amounts of HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars here.....AND that is a conservative amount.

Here is what Ivan Maisel had to say about why there is no playoff.
The reason is simple. In the current format, the power lies with the commissioners of the major conferences. If the NCAA ran the event, the money would flow through the NCAA before it went to the members.
"The absence of a single governing authority," Sandbrook wrote in his 2004 study, "allows virtually all the revenue derived from the bowl games to flow directly to specific conferences."

If college football doesn't come up with a better system of determining who the national champion is, don't you think players will start seeing that goal as something less than what it should be, with more opting early for the money and fame of the NFL?

USC is a classy institution. They don't have to gripe as you loudly claim. Yes, USC lost to Stanford because of bad coaching decisions both offensively and defensively.
Disco dancer check your grammar how about you're right? How about I have not seen USC gripping? Does that sound better disco dancer? Whining is correct, whinning is definitely wrong and misspelled...

Since you're passing out basic English 101 advice Nueternut, how about better punctuation in your first run-on sentence, as quoted above? As for the second sentence (as quoted above), it's griping, not gripping. ;)

This argument doesn't come up in FCS, DII, or DIII, all of which have a playoff.
