The director of all this activity was a short, heavyset man with wavy black hair and dark sunglasses, dressed inconspicuously in a black T-shirt and shorts. He is nationally renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson, and the cinematic movie set touches surrounding the Crane Avenue house had been put into place so he could shoot a photograph that would make it appear that the structure was on fire.

Also on hand yesterday was a two-man crew shooting a documentary on Crewdson for Gallery HD, which bills itself as the first and only arts and museum television channel broadcast in high definition. The station is available on VOOM, a high-definition satellite television service. The piece on Crewdson is scheduled to air in September.

"We're shooting his process, how he works, how it's done," said Ben Shapiro, one of the two Gallery HD crew members. "In a lot of ways, it resembles a feature film set."
