I like to check out other news progams, one is ebru (G25)...it appears they are trying to get viewers to ask cable, sat companies to add them. I assume if they are sucessfull that it will disapear as an FTA channel...is this usually the case?

I would say "Yes" to this, before I would say "No, they only Scramble when someone post in an Opem Forum, that it's in the clear on such and such Satellite".
Most here (probably 97 out of 100) believe the latter to be the only reason we ever lose channels.
I happen to believe there are several reasons. And yours makes more sense than there's, at least to me. But, ultimately it's several reasons and not one particular one. You could also say, if people don't beg their local Cable or Satellite provider to include them, that we could also lose this channel. After all, they are trying to make money, not provide a free service for you or me. Ultimately if we do lose it in the end, 97 out of 100 members here will say we lost it because it was posted in an Open Forum.........

EBRU is a Turkish channel with English language programming. It has been on IA5 for over a year as FTA on purpose by the station to reach the American (and Ethnic audience).

Right now it is only on IA5. So their appeal to IA5 viewers to ask cable or pay Sat TV to add them will not work. People who are watching IA5 are FTA watchers and it would not be in their interest to call. Most of the time when an FTA channel goes to CATV or Pay SatTV, it seizes to exist as FTA.

Thanks, I was wondering what country it was from.... I assume that since it's listed on Lyngsat, that it is ok to talk about it...otherwise to the moderators: please remove this thread...

I've seen people suggest we shouldn't post channels that are blatantly not intended for the public -- a la feeds, emergency uplinks, cable channels that temporarily go unscrambled, Dish Network channels that are temporarily open, professional sports games people shell out $$$ to see on PPV and cable, swearing CNN hosts, etc....

When a channel was announced as FTA, marketed as FTA, and listed as FTA on their provider's website (such as Ebru), I don't think many people have objected to any discussion. I think this section was created to encourage it.

Besides, that really has nothing to do with the original question :)

Anyway, if Ebru was to get on more cable companies, or even one of the big-named satellite providers, it may cease, but that's highly speculative. With a niche channel like this, it's more likely that some cities with high Turkish populations might get it on their systems, but less likely that someone like Dish is going to scoop it up at the time being.

Still, I agree with Sadoun - why the heck would FTAers call dish companies and demand their EbruTV? They already get it w/o the overpriced monthly fees!

On the other hand, EbruTV may cease being available on FTA if they don't get on a couple of cable systems to lessen their costs. I would imagine EbruTV's rationale is that any FTAers of Turkish descent will talk to their relatives/friends about the Turkish channel they are getting FTA. Most relatives/friends will not have FTA dishes, or would not be able to install/operate one for whatever reason, but would like the channel. Hence the appeal.

I agree with you that even if the channel does get added to a few cable systems, due to its niche, I doubt it would disappear from FTA.
