Has anyone said something funny about your FTA setup that just makes you laugh......and no not the "do you get free porn?" or "do you get all the channels?"

My mom has had two good lines to my stepdad about my setup.

First one....A few weeks ago they went to Sams Club. I asked my mom to pick me up a couple things and they were going to bring it over on the way home. They forget where to turn (which driveway)...my mom sees my 6 foot dish outside the garage and says to my stepdad "turn here. There's Tony's house". My stepdad says "Are you sure?"
My mom's response..."Yeah I'm sure someone else around here has a dish that size sitting outside their garage" :D

Second one was yesterday. She says to him "Do you know the Gophers play tonight?" (Minnesota Goofer college hockey)
My stepdad said "Its not on TV tonight" (it wasnt)
My moms response.."I'm sure Tony could watch it if he wanted with his setup" :)

They dont understand it...all my mom knows is I can watch a bunch of sports they can't ;)
And all my stepdad knows is I can watch stuff from Alaska

What ticks me off is that is usually what I hear when people see all the dishes.....They all think I am getting all Dishnetwork for free, in other words I'm hacking.

Camo green paint helps somewhat, people just don't notice as easily as when they are white or grey for some reason.
I have been asked if I can talk to the space station (I have but not on the TVRO dish!) or aliens...

"I don't know nothing about satellite" That was from a local telco DSL/cable installer last summer, lol. After he found out a little about free to air, he was becoming interested
in getting his own system. AFter seeing my collection of tv, scanner antennas and sat dishes, he was impressed.

My neighbor once freaked out when I told him PortaBUD (my 6' panel C-Band dish) was aimed at NASA to receive feeds from the ISS. He kept staring at the dish and asking me if I was serious.

That was back when NASA-HD wasn't a full time channel, and often had unedited feeds during shuttle missions.

My dish isn't up yet, (should arrive today) but I have a LOT of antennas, already (scanner, discones, shortwave, etc .. even a longwave, and huge directional; OTA, and WiFi/wireless network dishes and panels) . I know too many "tin foil hat" people who, if I said "aliens" would ask to come over and listen the next time they are on :facepalm. then I'd have to explain it's a spur of the moment thing and they just send me a mental message to log on, and by the time you got here, the transmission would be over so ... :shh

The one time the neighbor said to me was "what are you picking up...Japan?" (dish was pointed SW)
my response...."no....if I want NHK from Japan I aim the dish that way (pointing SE)" :D

I love giving smart *** answers like.

Q: Why do you need a dish that big?
A: I try to talk with aliens its so cool do you remember last week that big lighting strike well that was the space craft coming to hang out.

Q: Do you work for NASA.
A: I can't tell you it’s classified.

You don't work for NASA you just watch it on C-band.

I switched to Dish about two months ago. When the installer went out to the backyard, he took a step back and said "D**n, I never saw some one with their own head end in their back yard" (I have seven slimlines right next to my bud).
He then pulled out his iphone and started clicking away. I told him that it was costing him ten dollars per click for the tour. He freaked out.

Two weeks ago, I went back to DTV and the installer stepped out back and asked "ok, I give up, which one is the DTV dish". I thought he was joking. But finally, I pointed out the one that had the 3 lnb elongated attachment to the dish. He said "gee, I don't know how I missed that one". Needless to say, I watched him during the rest of the reinstall.

When people ask about my setup I tell them I have watched camel racing from over seas, German porsche car racing from Mongolia on an Arabic tv channel in english. Classic car road rally racing from New Zealand on a Arabic tv channel and other odd tv shows. They are so confused its priceless.

Think it's funny , but was meant to be insulting enough for me to remove one of my 4 dishes or homemade 8 bay ota antenna . My wife told me it was starting to look houchy , my 29 yr old daughter backed her up saying it made me look like a backward redneck hillbilly . Don't know about my wife , but my daughter knows me well .

My Aunt: "Do you get something on those things"
Me: "300 channels"
My Aunt: " " (silence)
Me: :)

She is not the first to say something like that. Its almost an insult implying you put them up simply for lawn decoration. Seriously, four dishes pointed at the sky and you think they do nothing.

went to staples to look for a 16gig usb stick, they were all out.I told the kid associate I have an fta sat receiver and use the usb stick to store programs. He said I should get a smartphone instead.

My mother after seeing my collection of equipement, "I think its time you grow up".
My girlfriend, "you should really listen to your mother".
Older colleague "you know you're showing your age by using that thing"
Friend "what the hell is that?"

Cheers, K

1] You have too much free time if you watch all of that!

2] Can you control the rover on Mars?

3] Are you working with SETI?

4] WTF?

5] (all those dishes) They don't really do anything, do they?

6] It's what? (referring to FREE) Bull!

The guy across the road from me watches me everytime I walk towards my dishes. They are all pointed towards his property over 500 feet away. I know them being aimed at his house annoys him. He's nosy at his best anyway. When I first put in my 8 footer his grown son came over and asked me if lost my signal, like his dad's dish does every time it rained or snowed. I told him nope that's why I got them. They've never asked me what I'm watching though.
