I have a lot of experience with E* and some with D* but none with FTA.

What HDTV can I get FTA from Calif., and, with what receiver, dish, LNB?

Please provide me with a detailed roadmap and Web URL's.

Thanks in advance!

There are several fta receivers can do 'some' hd , a few can even receive
the 'off the air' HDTV signals from your local stations, if you have a regualr outdoor antenna. There's just not that many hd signals that are full-time on fta right now, PBS has one or two channels, the Outdoor channel and maybe a couple of the networks-but I think those are all broadcast on c-band digital freqs, which means you need a 6' or bigger c-band dish. What channels do you want to pick up?

read read read and research

You could start by reading the review of the Coolsat 8000HD on the equipment review section here. HD receivers are still very young in fta, sev manufacturers are now coming out with hd boxes, Read their websites -coolsat, pansat, fortec, viewsat and several others are now selling, or about to sell new versions of hd-receivers. They are still mostly too new to have good info about yet, but at least the specs are available to read. There are many variables, and virtually none will do ALL hd signals.
And then, many users opt for fta-cards that go into their computers, for the
hd signals. I think you need a fairly fast computer/graphics card for those to operate well.
