This Friday Aug. 6th through Sunday is a Free HBO & Cinemax Free Preview Weekend on DISHNetwork. If you sign up for HBO by the end of the month you will get a $25 rebate after you keep HBO for at least 3 months. I confirmed all of the above with a CSR. So crank up your DVR's to record some movies for a rainy day. :)

However, it doesn't appear to include HBO-HD. Looking at the guide, it shows the HBO SD channels available, but the HBO-HD channel is still blocked out after 7p on Friday...

Did you happen to ask the CSR about that?

I didn't ask about HBO-HD. Based on what you found on the guide I'd say the promo is only a push for HBO/Cinemax subscriptions.

I spoke to a CSR at E* concerning the preview weekend and HBO-HD not being available. The CSR basically said the same content that is shown on the SD-HBO channel is mirrored on the HBO-HD channel just in HD. The HBO-HD channel is there for an incentive for (especially HD owners) people to subscribe to the HBO package.

So basically no free preview. If you want to see the HBO-HD channel then buy the HBO package and if you have the HD package then you will automatically get HBO-HD.

I wish Dish had a better way to informing their customers abt such previews. When I was with Cox, they would send out emails or when we called, CSRs would tell us such things...

Actually I got a card in the mail today from Dish promoting HBO and the Free Preview Weekend. That was the first time I got notified that way.

Thanks for posting this.
This is why I love this site! Information.
I would never have known if not for this site.
I agree, Dish should send out some kind of notice, whether by email, mail or SUBSCRIBER ALERT! like they have on 136.
I went through the weekend already and have several items set to record.

I did not get any such card. In fact I see red when I go the friday's schedule. Does that mean I do not get it or will it turn green tomorrow automatically?

- is it also for people who have their dishes pointing to the birds and have their receiver setup, but dont have an active subscription?

- does this start on Fridat 00:01? EST?PST?

Thanks

The times are from 6:15 AM Friday 8/6 until 5:30 AM Monday 8/9, according to a CSR who looked it up for me.

The card was primarily to promote HBO with a $25 rebate for a 3 month commitment but briefly mentioned the Free Preview Weekend. My guide was red last night but now has HBO on. Not sure if everyone gets the card. I cancelled HBO/Cinamax after the last Sopranos episode. Maybe the card went out to people that have cancelled HBO.

jdmart & mallu2u, I did not get the card, but my HBO and MAX channels are working fine... Now, my guide (721 receiver) was acting a bit weird, showing the HBO/MAX channels in red, then switching to available, but as long as I selected a movie in the time range, it worked.

Another bit of weirdness was that Showtime & Starz channels were doing the same thing, toggling between red and available. They, however, did not allow me to select the movie.

Free HBO weekend

I did not know about the free weekend either until my son accidentally found an HBO channel on. When I was with Directv they sent a message over satellite & you had a blinking light on your receiver. Dish is so screwed up.

Are you kidding me? On the few occasions where Dish Network has downloaded a 3-5 minute recording to peoples PVR's, people totally freak out and scream bloody murder threatening frivolous lawsuits and the like. Can you imagine all the additional bellyaching we'd hear if Dish Network actually did send messages to customers through the receivers updating customers on events like these? We have enough negativity as it is in the various Dish forums without adding more fuel to the fire thanks.

I wouldn't bellyache about it. Actually, I am going to email dish right now and tell them they should do what directv does and notify us of free wknd programming.

I'm not talking about 5 minutes. Just a 30 sec note saying something about it.

I can't believe how much soft porn is on cinemax. I never realized that. FREE PORN THIS WEEKEND ON CINEMAX. That's a compelling HD proposition if I ever heard one!

I wonder why they didn't mention this on yesterdays retailer chat. You would think they would want people to know about this.
Retailers are a pretty small group compared to their normal subscribers, aren't they ?? I don't imagine that the retailers are going to notify "their" customers of this either.

People have mentioned Dish "e-mailing" customers via their receivers. Is mail a function in receivers other than the 522 ?? I'm positive there's no mail menu anywhere.

I wouldn't have minded if Dish "sent" me a DVR recording promoting this. Like others, I only found out about it through DBS Talk, this site, and DSL Reports.

Should I change receivers?

MPEG 4 coming to Dish?
