Failing 622 - upgrade time?

Hi all, long time lurker and first post here.

I've been a Dish customer for close to 13 years now and have had an excellent experience all the while. I got the ViP622 when it first came out and so far has been good up until the last few months. The fans have a constant loud howling or high pitched scream. I've attributed it to temps, however the hard drive temps typically sit at 120 degrees.

I can stop the noise by holding the power button on the face which causes a re-sync of sorts. In time, it returns though.

Dish has suggested unplugging from the wall and plug back in. This doesn't work at all. Now I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade. The 922 sounds real nice, especially having the UI update. Now that Hopper is announced, that also looks promising. When I contacted Dish in December, they said a 922 upgrade would be (I forget exactly) several hundred dollars. I was taken aback on this since I'm leasing the hardware and not owning it. Why charge so much for something I'm renting?? They said to come back at the end of December and look for a good price on 922. That has come and gone and there was no price offer :-(

So now what to do... Should I wait for Hopper, push for 922, settle for 722 or push for 622 replacement which really wasn't even offered. If there's cost involved, I'd much rather see new features and enhancements. The 722 + Sling isn't enough to justify any dramatic cost.

Apologies for the rant, thanks for listening.

Im a dish network technician and I would not advise getting a 922.

First the perks of a 922. Has amazing record time all the buttons are led touch screen and looks very sweet.

The cons of a 922. The download time for start up is extremely long. If you put the batterys in the remote before its done programming its self it make the download time 3x longer. The setup for the 922 is extremely long and ridiculous. The software isnt stable at all. And the harddrives seems very weak amd unreliable. Its laggy at times and seems to lock up frequently.

All in all the 722 is the best way to go with being a stable system and reliable.

The ViP922 is being withdrawn, anyway. Dish will not be sending any more out. Maybe a retailer will have one. Read the threads. You don't want one at any cost, even free.

If you must move now, the ViP722K and Sling adapter are the way to go.

If you can wait a few weeks, the Hopper will be out. Prob know more, including pricing and release date, sometime in the first week in February. Of course, there's no guarantee they will publish then. My best guess is a Feb 29 release. I think the Hopper Joey Leap day combo will be irresistible.

Of course, you should be moving everything to an EHD now.

Get your 622 replaced basically the difference from a 722 is a smaller hard drive and an EHD takes care of that. A 722K will give a little more benefits if you use OTA. Do you really want to be a BETA TESTER with a Hopper?

Hi Dan, :welcometo Sat Guys! I would be happy to take a look at your account and see what upgrade options are available to you. The ViP 922 receiver is not available for upgrades at this time. The ViP722 is a great reciever and you will be able to sling with this receiver. Upgrading at this time would not exclude you from furture upgrades if you decide you like another receiver upgrade offer. Please send me a Pm with your account number or phone number and I will see what we can do. Thank you!

Thank you for the overwhelming responses and input! I'm grateful for your honest suggestions. The 922 certainly sounds good on paper and sounds like more problems than it's worth.

Thank you Mary for the offer, will send PM with details.

You guys are the best! 722 on order, sling adapter in the pipe. Thanks Mary for the outstanding support! Absolutely blown away.

I would still recommend the USB fan to help extend the life of your new 722. The 622/722 units tend to become unstable when the HDD temps get above 120 degrees.

I just went to Staples and got a laptop coolong fan to go under my 722. Has brought the max temp down to 120 with an average of 113.
