I needing to get an external HDD to back up my 6 year old computer before it dies (it's acting up), so I'm thinking of getting a Seagate or Western Digital 1TB external HDD. I plan on getting a new computer soon. Once I get the new computer could I take the external HDD and use it for my Dish 722k? I know about the fee, but will the 722k format the HDD for DVR use?
Thanks for all replys,

I don't think so. I'm 99% sure that the reformat that the DVR does removes any current partitions and installs its own.

Actually there is a way that I think was documented earlier here.

It involves formatting the drive first on the DVR and then without recording anything hooking it up to a Linux system and using something like GPARTED to shrink the EXT3 partition to what you want. Then you can create a secondary partition on the drive that Windows or Mac can recognize.

If you so a search I'm sure you'll find the procedure. But it's not for the light-hearted especially considering today cheap prices on EHD's.
