Some of the external HDs have no power switch, they just sense power from the USB port. Would this work with dish receivers or is there always power at the usb port? If I had an external HD with a power switch would there be much reason to turn it off? Also if I put stuff from my 622 on the HD and then upgrade to 722 can I view them?

Thanks,
Brad

Brad,

Dish's receivers do NOT and will NOT provide electric current to any device connected to the USB Port.

If you wish to use a device connected to these USB ports then that device must be either SELF Powered (Batteries) or get its current to operate from a separate source.

Not true, they can power at the very least a USB memory stick. Maybe some USB-powered hard drives as well, though I've never tried.

Sorry if my question wasn't clear, what I meant was that some external drives have no on/off switch. They have their own power supply but sense if the "computer" is turned on or not and turn themselves on/off automatically. I don't know if when the 622 receiver goes into "sleep" mode would the usb port power down so that the ex. hard drive would think it was off and shut down?

Thanks,
Brad

I have a Western Digital 500gig My Book Essential. I have a similar question -- when my 622 goes into "standby" after 4 hrs inactivity, what happens to my WD?

The instruction book says that to turn off the HD, I should click on "safely remove drive" and then turn off the hard drive (power switch is on front).

Obviously the 622 is not my XP computer--so, how/when do I know when it's "safe" to power the WD hard drive off? , I know, of course not to do so while it's archiving.

You can safely turn it off anytime your not archiving or restoring. The instructions for computers address issues you won't encounter with a 622.
