When will Direct add this option to hd receivers? I'm ready to switch over from E. That is the main hold up.
Jeff

I have it now on my HR20-700. With Directv you need an esata external drive. I am using a Seagate Freeagent 750 drive and it and the HR20-700 have been performing perfectly for 5 months now.

The Directv storage is different from Dish's.

You hook up an external drive and it replaces your internal entirely. There is no moving data back and forth. There is also no fees to use it :)

There is a thread about it here:
http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-cutting-edge-ce-discussion-forum/100775-hr20-external-hard-drive-fyi-support-esata.html

It has details on drives, cables, etc. They must be eSATA - not USB.

WELCOME to the site!

jdennis,
Using an External HD is NOT officially supported by D* yet, but there are plenty of people using them ....most have had very good luck with them.

Few things to remember, what masterdeals said is entirely correct, you cannot move between rec's.
You will want to use one with the esata connection, make sure you get the right connector, most are usb.
The reason D* went with Esata is that it is much faster than USB.

I used my EHD via USB with E* with no problem at all. I don't understand what Jimbo means that D* thinks they are too slow. I also used it with Charter cable when I was with them with no problem at all. And both those companies use the EHD as an ADDITION to the internal hard drive, not a replacement. So if E* has it enabled, and my shoddy cable company has it enabled, why in the world not D*? I just don't know why that it is too much trouble for D* to get on the ball and enable the USB port like everybody else.

D* has not developed a software solution to share both drives. They may in the future, or may not. As of now the external acts as a replacement.

They prioritized other fixes in the software and haven't come back to it yet.

ESATA / SATA connection is much faster than USB.

I think Dish's usb use causes for slow transfer times correct? Prob would have been faster with eSATA.

And it is true, eSATA is faster than usb 2.0

  • USB 1.1 – 15 Mbps
  • FireWire (1394a) – 400 Mbps
  • USB 2.0 – 480 Mbps
  • FireWire 800 (1394b) – 800 Mpbs
  • SATA 1.5 – 1.5 Gbps
  • SATA 3.0 – 3.0 Gbps
